Three Benefits of Music Therapy in Eating Disorder Recovery Treatment The harrowing experience of recovering from an eating disorder (ED) involves deprogramming one’s own relationship with reality. Old routines are replaced, new habits are drilled, and self-image is deconstructed. Furthermore, patients are encouraged to articulate their experience in an unfamiliar e...

Big thank you to Menlo Park Library San Mateo County Health for inviting me to speak about our new (grant funded!) music therapy for Asian Americans program to increase linkages to behavioral and mental health services in the area. What an honor it was to be in community with so many AAPI advocates. Thank you all!
Hi everyone, exciting news! Please consider sharing this with Asian American affiliate groups in the Bay Area. Our community needs access to resources like this more than ever. You can click the link in my story highlights “Asian American Music Therapy”
What's the difference between a music therapist, a music teacher, and a musician? Chances are if you're a music therapist, you've been asked this question at least once (if not 100 times!) during your career. The beauty of music is that it is inherently therapeutic, even without intentionally setting goals. However, a music therapist can maximize all the benefits music provides. I’ve been in each of these roles at some point in my life and, in my opinion, the biggest difference between all of them is the PURPOSE and INTENTION behind the use of music.

How do you know a music therapy career is a good fit for you and your lifestyle? We hear so much about the positives of being a music therapist, but are there any downsides? For transparency's sake, Mai Abe, MT-BC, sits down to talk about her perspective on three downsides of being a music therapist.

There are a lot of common misconceptions about music therapy. Here Mai Abe, a board-certified music therapist, debunks a few of these misconceptions.
In order, she covers
1. All musicians can be music therapists
2. Music therapy is just listening to music and being healed.
3. Certain types of music are more therapeutic than others.

What is music therapy? Mai Abe, founder of Creative Vibes Music Therapy briefly goes over this question, and explains the mission of Creative Vibes.
What's the difference between cultural competency and cultural humility, and why are these terms important to us as clinicians?
I hope that with this explanation it can inspire clinicians to be more mindful of their biases and how that affects the way they work with their clients. It's impossible to exist in a therapeutic relationship as a "blank slate" when we have lives outside of our work and profession. Being willing to acknowledge that we're not perfect and innocent all the time is the hardest but most important part of this work.

Go check out my new video on financial literacy for self employed music therapists on my YouTube channel!!
Financial literacy is not part of our education, to our detriment. As much as I’m sure many of us do this work because we love it, and we get joy from being a supporter of other humans, the reality is that we live in a capitalist society, and we have to make money to survive. The reality is that we deserve to have the knowledge to not only live, but thrive in a world that demands transactional relationships.
Here are my three tips for self-employed/contracting music therapists.
1. Pay your taxes quarterly.
2.Track your mileage for optimal tax credit.
3. Classifying your expenses: business vs. personal.
DISCLAIMER: I am by no means a financial advisor. These are just things that I've learned on my own, but I would also recommend contacting a tax accountant or financial advisor with any questions.

Hey there,
I see you. I see how you are doing your best and making it throughout the hour, the day, the week.... It's not easy, but you've already come so far and you have learned a lot along the way.
If you feel like your efforts are still lackluster, please remember that you are doing the best you can with what you have at this moment in time. You are enough, you have always been enough, and that is sufficient for right now. And that your enoughness is seen by those who also need the reminder and by those who understand the work you put into simply being you.
Keep going! You're doing great.

Have you heard of the 5-4-3-2-1 technique?
It's a way to practice grounding that can help lower anxiety, bring your attention to the present moment, increase feel-good emotions, and so much more!
Did you know that you can apply this technique in a musical way?
5.) Look at an instrument or album cover. What 5 details do you observe? Are there vibrant patterns? What is its shape? is the album or instrument made of different materials? Are there accessories within/ that are a part of the album or instrument? What colors do you see?
4.) If you have an instrument nearby, pick it up. Notice four things about how it feels to touch. Is it cool or warm? Heavy or light? Does it have a texture? Is it hollow or solid?
3.) Listen to your favorite song or start playing an instrument. What 3 kinds or qualities of sounds do you hear? Do you hear happy or sad chords? Do you hear a deep or metallic timbre? How long does the sound last from when it is first played?
2.) Bring the instrument to your nose, or imagine two things that you could smell while listening to an album. Does the instrument have an earthy smell? Does it smell metallic? (To help with this, I like to picture that I am in a room filled with fragrances that complement the music, like picturing a forest or beach.)
1.) Lastly, if you have a snack or beverage near you, take a bite or sip. Does this particular flavor complement what you are listening to or experiencing via the other senses? If you don't have a snack or beverage, what would you eat or drink alongside the music you are hearing?
Have you ever used this technique musically? Share below!

When I listen to the sounds of nature or the hums of the city, I am reminded of John Cage. Most people think of his work 4'33" as a tongue in cheek piece, but I think the fact that he chose to remove deliberate sound is genius.
When we step out of the way and listen to the sounds around us, we may be surprised to hear how prevalent music is on smaller levels, like wind blowing through trees, or rolling waves on a beach. Even our heartbeats or the ticking of an analog clock carry music innately.
Allow yourself some time today or this week to be still in nature or in your city or town. Can you hear the music in the space around you?

||: You are whole :||
You don't need to accomplish daring goals, or work tirelessly, or feel like you earned it, or that you need to qualify to achieve this state of being....
Because all along you were whole. You are currently whole. And you will continue to be whole whether you are a part of a group or on your own. Be bold enough to speak confidently of this to your inner being and to speak loudly of this statement so that others awaken to this fact within themselves also.
Tag a friend who is wonderfully whole in the comments below.
As much as we all would like to ensure that mistakes or awkward situations never occur in my life, we have to come to terms with the fact that we cannot and will not be able to control everything, especially the actions of others.
Despite not having full control of things outside of us, we can control how we chose to respond and whether we will allow the external choices affect us internally. Now sometimes, it's easier said than done to do this, but it can be done!
What are some other things we can or cannot control?
How do you mindfully release control?

No matter how much we push down or ignore our emotions they come to the surface - and sometimes in big ways at inconvenient times.
If it is safe to do so, acknowledging your emotions when you notice them and which they are can be the most effective way to manage your emotions and can lead to a better quality of life.
When I feel an emotion other than happiness creep up, I like to place my hand over my heart, take a deep breath and verbally acknowledge which emotion I am experiencing. Once acknowledged I take the time to decide how I will move forward in my acknowledgement. I may journal how I feel in an email to myself or with the note app, or I will listen to a song that validates how I feel and then choose a song that represents how I want to feel. Other times I just need to sit with the feeling until it passes through, like with grief.
How do you meet your emotions?

Have you ever shared a terrifying experience with someone just to hear, "well, I [insert another terrifying experience]...." or have you ever noticed yourself saying this to someone who has shared a terrifying experience with you?
It can be an invalidating experience to feel like someone is "one-upping" or determining whether your trauma is traumatic enough to qualify as a trauma.
Remember, trauma is NEVER a competition. If someone fails to acknowledge how impactful something is to you that doesn't make it any less severe.

The work of a music therapist never stops! There's so much music to keep on our radar that it can be hard to notice them all.
To the MTs that see this post, what songs are you learning for sessions this month?

Rest
/rest/
verb
cease work or movement in order to relax, refresh
oneself, or recover strength.
noun
an instance or period of relaxing or ceasing to engage
in strenuous or stressful activity.
Rest is so important that just by engaging in a
balanced amount of rest can positively impact mental
health, physical health, creativity, and rate of
production at work.
I find that the moment I catch myself saying "I don't
have time to rest" is when I need it the most.
Sometimes rest looks like doing absolutely nothing and
that is a-ok! If we continuously run on empty, what
quality of work are we giving to those we serve and
help?
What does resting look like to you?

Did you know that YOU are an instrument.
Your vocal folds are strings that produce sounds to talk and sing.
Your body can be used for a variety of percussive sounds - stomping, shuffling, finger-snapping, clapping.... you name it! You're the only one like you, so be sure to take care of yourself to be able to fully enjoy the music you create for a long time! :)

The fourth video in my series discussing the top 3 benefits of music therapy in each population I've worked with. Obviously, there are many more benefits of music therapy than those I discuss in this video! However, these should give you a good idea of how music therapy can be best utilized. First we go through an overview of early childhood development (ages 2-5/6) and then we go over the benefits of music therapy.
1. Opportunities to learn through play
2. Building Self Esteem (Free Choice)
3. Enhancing Awareness of Others
You are so much more than the job you do, the things you produce and the things you do for others. You are worthy just for being who you are. Your worth does not change or fluctuate based on outside factors. Love y’all 💕

Some red flags to look out for in your relationships 🚩🚩🚩
Okay, hear me out: when we constantly talk down to ourselves, we start to believe the negative things we say. All of a sudden, it becomes, “well of course I couldn’t do that, I knew that I was dumb already, why would I even try?”
Instead of taking accountability and responsibility, we end up making excuses for our behavior.
It’s not always a conscious thing, and this is something I’ve been guilty of too! But just something to mull over during this time.
