We are all on a daily journey & start somewhere.
I officially started my journey back in April 2017. Despite turning my ankle on that very 1st Spartan Super Race (San Jose), I loved it so much I eventually became a certified Spartan SGX Coach.
Remember we are blessed to wake each day in order to start anew and continue to progress forward.
Pause to acknowledge how far you’ve come and far you have the opportunity to go.
Keep that perspective in perspective.

NEVER TOO LATE
“It’s never too late to change your life.”
Back in 2016, my depression/anxiety/insomnia was at it’s worst (see photo 1 - side by side (good day vs a bad day)).
The amount of stress, lack of sleep & motivation, loss of purpose & sense of self, I was dealing with I could not longer tolerate.
I was in complete inner turmoil and felt helpless.
I didn’t realize I was also experiencing severe burnout.
In order to save myself from myself, I had to completely disconnect from the “matrix”, get the help I needed and rebuild me from the ground up.
With the support of my wife, my daughter, & closest members in my family I was able to climb out of a really dark place, recover & restart on a new path, which ultimately changed & saved my life (see photos 2 & 3).
When you feel like you’ve hit a wall or obstacle in your life that you cannot get past or conquer, it’s ok to start over and change paths in order to heal & recover!

FIND YOUR JOY
An important lesson in life I learned on my journey is to find your joy.
Not only find it, but truly acknowledge it.
3 ways I have found & acknowledge my joy are:
1️⃣ Being more present for my family - my wife and my daughter especially bring me the most joy as they love me unconditionally, accept me for being perfectly imperfect, and are the foundation for all things I do in life as a coach/trainer/athlete/human.
2️⃣ “Finding the joy in other people’s joy” as my colleague and friend says. Coaching my clients & students and seeing their joy through what they learn and experience on their fitness journey with me empowers me and reminds me daily why I continue & need to continue to do what I do.
3️⃣ Giving back to myself through better self-care such as breathwork, meditation, yoga, mobility and journaling. Most importantly, training for and taking on challenges & events such as , , anything else OCR-related since they remind me that movement is one of my passions that gives me purpose and most importantly joy.

BELIEVE
Believing in yourself, 💯 authentically accepting and owning who you are and what makes you uniquely you will propel you towards achieving the next steps in your life.
Once you BELIEVE in yourself you will be 50% towards reaching those goals and aspirations you’ve set for yourself to achieve!
The rest of it will require you to
1️⃣ Commit to putting in the work every day, hour, minute, second, set and rep.
2️⃣ Be consistent in showing up for yourself everyday despite how your own mind might be telling you otherwise.
3️⃣ Be open to learning, taking a new path, and looking at your journey from a different perspective.
4️⃣ Find, join, connect with a like-minded community/group/tribe that will give you accountability, purpose and drive that you will need when you’re having one of those “days”.
5️⃣ Not be afraid to restart when you hit an obstacle. Give yourself some grace when you do, remember your WHY and PURPOSE then pivot/adapt to continue progressing forwards.

PROGRESS NOT PERFECTION

On your fitness journey you will discover and become enlightened by 2 very important lessons:

1️⃣ Perfection on all things about your fitness is impossible and should not be what you are striving for daily. We are all human subject to daily life occurrences, challenges, missteps, unwanted stressors, life-changing events, etc. So give yourself some grace and recognize that fitness is never going to be PERFECT so do the best you can and what you can everyday, every minute, every second, every set, and every rep you put in to working on becoming your best possible version of yourself!

2️⃣ Your fitness journey will not last one day & achieving those goals you have will not happen overnight. Your fitness journey should become a lifelong endeavor in setting and establishing a lifestyle based on consistency, commitment, challenges, ups/downs, starting anew, and most importantly finding joy in the process. All of the above should be based on PROGRESS, progressing slowly, intentionally and with a purpose!

PATIENCE & TRUST

Always be mindful of these 2 important components on your fitness journey.

1️⃣ Changes in what you see in the mirror or on a scale are not always a great metric to measure your progress on your fitness journey. PATIENCE with the process is 🔑! Instead, measure how you perform in doing your daily activities, your hobbies, as well as playing & having fun keeping up with the children in your lives.

2️⃣ Take a birds-eye look at your goals and realize that it will take time to reach them. TRUST the process! Do not expect or push yourself so hard that you risk overtraining, potential burnout and become apathetic towards the goals you originally set for yourself. Give yourself grace and take a moment each day, each hour, each minute and each second to pat yourself on your own back that you are progressing and you are getting closer & closer to achieving those goals.

🗣 SPARTAN RAM BOOT CAMP 🗣

My new for 2022 Spartan RAM Boot Camp class officially starts in San Jose this Friday morning at 7:05AM!

My Spartan RAM Boot Camp involves your bodyweight and the .fit tool. I use it for my own training for training, for .fit training and with my Personal Training clients. Now I’d like to extend Spartan RAM Training to the general public via this boot camp!

The Spartan RAM is one of the tools utilized at Spartan Stadion Races as well as Spartan DEKA events such as DEKA STRONG, DEKA MILE & DEKA FIT.

Come learn about and train to enhance your fitness with Spartan RAM!

➡️ Weights vary from 11 lbs up to 55 lbs.
➡️ Classes will cover the gamut of fitness training modalities such as HIIT, endurance, functional strength, and recovery.
➡️ Open to ages 10+!
➡️ All classes are run outdoors (weather-permitting).

NOTE:
1️⃣ Classes require a minimum of 6 students to be booked/attending.

I have offered and coached my Hybrid Spartan Boot Camp in-person & virtual training solution since October of 2020. I had students who started with me where it rained the very 1st class yet they still worked through it and kept coming back for more! The class eventually split into 2 class offerings: a virtual only class & a hybrid (in-person & virtual simultaneously) class - what a ride it has been! It is now December 30, 2021 as I write this and as part of celebrating the upcoming New Year I am formally announcing that my Hybrid Spartan Boot Camp is going to be switching from a twice weekly, live in-person and virtual class to a 30 minute, pre-recorded, virtual On-Demand Spartan Boot Camp with a monthly subscription of only $12/month! 🤯

My On-Demand Spartan Boot Camp is a month to month service so there’s no obligation to sign a long-term contract. You can access it on any device (computer, tablet and mobile) - please see attached for examples of how it looks. As part of your monthly subscription, you will receive the following:

1:1 PERSONAL TRAINING

This is my friend, one of tattoo artists and PT client Pedro originally based San Jose, CA and now based in Santa Cruz, CA.

I met Pedro through my brother-in-law Mike of . When I 1st made my career switch from engineering to fitness, Pedro was my first ever PT client under and he eventually transitioned to taking my group training classes at the gym I ended up working for.

After we recently re-connected to further work on my father’s tattoo sleeve on my right arm and a bit of a hiatus, he has returned to training with me!

I’m forever grateful and blessed to have you as a friend, tattoo artist and client Pedro!

1:1 SPARTAN TRAINING

My cousin Allan is progressing nicely through the Fitness phase of his training. He has been following an online program using my training app that I specifically designed for his Spartan Training needs.

There were some challenges and real-life obstacles he faced since I last saw him, but like all Spartans do he found ways to conquer and overcome them.

1:1 Ninja Warrior Training

This is my PT client Giselle aka Unicorn Ninja. She originally started training with me at 7 years old back in June 2019 at the gym I used to work for. Giselle loves unicorns and her background is in gymnastics. Her Mom, Thuy , approached me and asked if I’d be interested and willing to coach her since Giselle was inspired by seeing me training for and pursuing .

I was beyond elated, grateful and so honored to take on the duty of becoming her trainer/coach.

Giselle plans to pursue competing on & I know with consistent training along with her belief and full commitment to learning and growing her skillset she will one day soon be a fierce competitor!

Working with her from mid-2019 through just when the COVID-19 pandemic started was truly amazing and inspired me to continue leveling up as a trainer/coach. Unfortunately her training had to come to a halt due to the pandemic.

Fast forward to mid-2021 and Giselle has returned taller and is getting faster and stronger! I am so grateful and blessed to be able to coach Giselle again. Thank you so much to her parents, Thuy and Derek, for supporting Giselle on her ninja training journey with me. I can hardly wait til we get to do even more awesome training in the coming weeks and months ahead, which I will be sharing as we continue forward.

1:1 SPARTAN TRAINING

This is my PT client, cousin and God brother, I call him my big brother Allan from .

His father and my father worked together in California as field workers back in the day in areas like Walnut Grove.

Allan and I basically grew up together in the late 70’s throughout the 80’s with # .

As teens we somehow lost our brotherhood, our connection, our family ties. It wasn’t until about 2008 that we reconnected and realized how much we missed and lost in life together as brothers/cousins/family.

Allan has been there for my family and I since we reconnected. He is always there to lift me 🆙 whenever I am down and battling this depression/anxiety I live with.

It’s my turn now to help lift and level him 🆙 to the levels he needs to be at to tackle his first Trifecta.

We did a Spartan Super in Sacramento back in 2019 as a family with my sis , my brother-in-law and my wife and he’s now ready to take it to the next level.

We are scheduled to do the following races this year:
1️⃣ Spartan Super Monterey (August 21st)
2️⃣ Spartan Beast Tahoe (September 25th)
3️⃣ Spartan Stadion Oracle Park (December 4th)

Yesterday was the start of his next step on his and in about a month I’ll share where he’s at.

KIDS SUMMER PROGRAM

Bay Area OCR presents Round 1 of their Kids Obstacle Course Race Training program!

Cost: $150 for 4 weeks
Class Day: Saturday
Class Time: 10:00AM-11:00AM
Schedule: June 19th to July 10th

Bay Area OCR was started by both Coach Joe Bala and Coach Pete Tapao during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bay Area OCR Spartan/OCR Training is designed for Teens (13+) and Adults who are new, beginner or returning athletes interested in taking on a Spartan/OCR event. Coach Joe and Coach Pete are now excited to officially announce their Kids OCR Training program designed and intended for kids aged 6-12 years old who also express interest in tackling a Spartan/OCR Kids event!

Round 1 starts on Saturday, June 19th at 10:00AM and we will meet every Saturday for 4 weeks through July 10th. Training for this program will be at in Fremont, CA.

On July 10th the newly trained Bay Area OCR Kids will be put through a Kids Obstacle Course Race challenge designed to test what they learned in the program and challenge their physical, mental, and social skills that they have developed in working with Coach Joe and Coach Pete.

Parents! The onus is now on you to get your kids signed up and get them moving again as it’s much safer now with respect to COVID-19 to be outside with others doing what we are all designed to do, which is MOVE and have FUN while doing so!
