Today, Sunday, September 1, 2024, is the Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost, St Giles feast day, and the 12 Holy Brothers. "For if any man thinks himself to be something, whereas he is nothing, he deceives himself." The central theme of today's Epistle is found in the above sentence. After two thousand years of conveying this message, very few people have changed their lives and are living more humbly and helpful among their fellows. This seems especially true today as we are told repeatedly that we need greater self-esteem and constant affirmation of our own individual self-worth.

Because of the Fall and the consequences of Original Sin, we tend toward self-centeredness (pride). We actually believe we are more than we really are and when we do not get our way we often have a 'pity party' or a full-blown tantrum - and I do not have to describe this because anyone who knows himself/herself will recognize these traits. This is why St Paul is reaching out to us and instructing us how to be more Christlike in our attitudes and actions.

To love others you must first start the process of self-denial. Love is the giving of yourself selflessly for the sake of another or others. The key word is SELFLESSLY. In your actions you seek the fulfillment and happiness of the Other and do not think of yourself in the process. Love isn't a warm fuzzy feeling, it is action, it is doing for another joyfully without thinking about your own wants and desires. Love always manifests itself in generous service to another or a group of others. Jesus calls us to this love in everything He did for us. And though it may often call for great sacrifice there is still a joy in serving others for their own sake.

Do not think of yourself as a person in authority think of yourself as a servant who seeks only the good both temporal and eternal of the ones you serve.

Commemoration of SAINT GILES
Tradition tells us that in the seventh century the Athenian Giles left his native Greece for a rough hermitage in far-distant Gaul. Hunters of a local ruler accidentally wounded Giles as he was shielding a fleeing deer. The ruler, Flavius said to him, "This must be the holy Giles! Come out of your hermitage, servant of God, and teach my Franks about heaven. They need you more than this forest does." Flavius built a monastery on the site of the hermitage; and under Giles' leadership it became a center of civilization and Christianity for all that sector of Gaul.

Let the blessed abbot Giles intercede for us, O Lord. May his prayers win us Your help, since our own actions cannot merit it.

Commemoration of the TWELVE HOLY BROTHERS
These fourth-century apostles refused to offer sacrifice to pagan gods. After imprisonment in an African jail, they died for Christ in pagan spectacles at various places along the Italian coast.

Today's Gospel reading is a portion from the Sermon on the Mount. It has to do with the providence of God and not being concerned with the mundane things of this world. Remember the "Lilies of the Field". The PROVIDENCE of GOD. How often do we serve the things of this world and neglect the most important thing Eternal Life? But think about this: Jesus is calling us to have a relationship with God. He is calling us to love God above all created things. Our lives are so brief but most of the world seeks after the created things of this world, looking for love in all of the wrong places. If we seek happiness in the things of this world and neglect a relationship with the ONE Who provided all of those things then we will, in the end, worship those things to which we have enslaved ourselves. First, seek after God and His Holiness and everything you need will be provided. Everyone says they want to go to heaven and most people think they will but heaven is seeing GOD in the face as He is in Himself. So if you don't want to have a relationship with Him in this life why would you want to spend all of eternity with Him in the next. It is all about love and God will ratify who you loved while on earth. If you loved Him above all others you will be with Him. If you love yourself above all others you will be with you for all eternity.

I would like to apologize for not having broadcast the Mass for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Mass I was able to attend was at 6:00 AM and on a work day. Presently, there just is not enough time for me to set up and break down the camera for Holy Days of obligation on work days.

Today in the Gospel Our Lord, again demonstrates to the Jews that the mercy of GOD extends NOT JUST TO ISRAEL but to man humanity. Yes the Israelites were chosen by GOD as 'His People' whom He set apart from the rest of the tribes of the earth. Because from the "Seed' of Abraham would come the Salvation of the world. The Revelation of Christ was not to be exclusive and hidden to Israel but was to be given to humanity as a whole so that all men would have the opportunity for salvation. The story related in the Gospel shows that the Israelites who were cured were not the ones that were grateful to Christ but an outsider. That my friends, is a terrible judgment.
Always be humble and grateful for the many blessings Our Lord sends to you every day because of His infinite mercy and love.

Commemoration of SAINT AGAPITUS
When only 15 years old, Agapitus was beheaded at Praeneste (Palestrina), Italy, about the year 275, as his punishment for professing Christ. Legend has it that he was beheaded only because the animals in the arena refused to attack him, and that a tribune, Anastasius, watching the "entertainment," was converted by the animal's reaction to the boy martyr.

Let the Church rejoice in the trust she places in the intercessions of Your holy martyr Agapitus, O God, and grant that through the prayers of this saint she may always serve You devotedly in peace and security.

Commemoration of SAINT HELEN
St. Helen was born in Britain and espoused to the Roman Emperor, Constantius Chlorus. Her son Constantine became the first Christian Emperor of Rome. The saintly Empress made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, where she had the joy of discovering the true Cross, to enshrine which, she built a magnificent Basilica on Mount Calvary. Saint Helen died in August, A.D. 326.

O Lord Jesus Christ, who to blessed Helen didst reveal the place where Thy cross was hidden, in order, through her, to enrich Thy Church with this precious treasure: grant us through her prayers, that by means of the ransom of this Tree of Life, we may attain to the reward of eternal life: Who livest . . .

This Sunday is "Good Samaritan Sunday" the Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost. It is also the Feast Day of Saints Tiburtius and Susanna (288 A.D.); and Saint Philomena (304 A.D.)

Today Our Lord is challenging us not only to reach out to those in need through acts of sacrifice and charity but to never underestimate the grace of GOD working and sanctifying those we may despise, distrust, or believe to be scoundrels and unbelievers. The Jews always looked at the Samaritans as heretics and cultural degenerates so Jesus challenged them to demonstrate that sometimes even those we think are "less" than we are in the eyes of God are, in reality, closer to Him by their simple humility and charitable disposition.
Never underestimate the Grace of God working in the most unlikely souls.

Commemoration of SAINTS TIBURTIUS AND SUSANNA
Tiburtius was the son of the prefect of Rome, a convert to the Faith. Shortly after being ordained subdeacon, the young man was betrayed to the persecutors by an apostate. Like St. Lawrence, Tiburtius was tortured by fire. He was then beheaded, about A.D. 288.
On the same day, a noble Christian virgin by the name of Susanna suffered a similar death. Because of her vow of virginity, she had refused to marry the son of Emperor Diocletian; so she was beheaded in her own home by that ruler's orders.

Comfort us, O Lord, with the unfailing protection of Your holy martyrs Tiburtius and Susanna, for You are always merciful to those who are helped by Your saints.

Commemoration of SAINT PHILOMENA
Little is known of her life, and the information was received by private revelation from her. Martyred at about age 14 in the early days of the Church.

In 1802 the remains of a young woman were found in the catacomb of Saint Priscilla on the Via Salaria. It was covered by stones, the symbols on which indicated that the body was a martyr named Saint Philomena. The bones were exhumed, cataloged, and effectively forgotten since there was so little known about the person.

In 1805 Canon Francis de Lucia of Mugnano, Italy was in the Treasury of the Rare Collection of Christian Antiquity (Treasury of Relics) in the Vatican. When he reached the relics of Saint Philomena he was suddenly struck with a spiritual joy, and requested that he be allowed to enshrine them in a chapel in Mugnano. After some disagreements, settled by the cure of Canon Francis following prayers to Philomena, he was allowed to translate the relics to Mugnano. Miracles began to be reported at the shrine including cures of cancer, healing of wounds, and the Miracle of Mugnano in which Venerable Pauline Jaricot was cured a severe heart ailment overnight. Philomena became the only person recognized as a Saint solely on the basis of miraculous intercession as nothing historical was known of her except her name and the evidence of her martyrdom.

Pope Leo XII granted permission for the er****on of altars and churches in her honor. Pope Gregory XVI authorized her public veneration, and named her patroness of the Living Rosary. The cure of Pope Pius IX, while archbishop of Imola, was attributed to Philomena; in 1849, he named her patroness of the Children of Mary. Pope Leo XIII approved the Confraternity of Saint Philomena, and raised it to an Archconfraternity. Pope Pius X raised the Archconfraternity to a Universal Archconfraternity, and named Saint John Vianney its patron. Saint John Vianney himself called Philomena the New Light of the Church Militant, and had a strong and well-known devotion to her. Others with known devotion to her include Saint Anthony Mary Claret, Saint Euphrasia Pelletier, Saint Francis Xavier Cabrini, Saint John Nepomucene, Neumann, Saint Madeline Sophie Barat, Saint Peter Chanel, Saint Peter Julian Eymard, Blessed Anna Maria Taigi, and Venerable Pauline Jaricot.

Addition Info:

In 1802, the bones of a female between the ages of 13 and 15 were discovered in the catacomb of St. Priscilia. An inscription near her tomb read "Peace be with thee, Philomena", along with drawings of 2 anchors, 3 arrows and a palm. Near her bones was discovered a small glass vial, containing the remains of blood. Because it was a popular custom of the early martyrs to leave symbols and signs such as these, it was easily determined that St. Philomena was a virgin and a martyr. Her popularity soon became widespread, with her most memorable devotees being St. John Vianney, St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, St. Peter Eymard, and St. Peter Chanel. After being miraculously cured, Ven. Pauline Jaricot insisted that Pope Gregory XVI begin an examination for the beatification of St. Philomena, who was to become known as the "wonder worker". After hundreds of other miraculous cures, she was beatified in 1837. St. Philomena, who the pope named as the Patroness of the Living Rosary and the Patroness of the Children of Mary, is the only person recognized as a saint solely on the basis of her powerful intercession, although pertinent revelations regarding her life have been recorded. Her relics are now preserved in Mugnano, Italy.

O God, who among the other marvels of Thy power, hast granted even to the weaker s*x the victory of martyrdom, mercifully grant, that we who celebrate the heavenly birthday of blessed Philomena, Thy Virgin and Martyr, may by her example draw nearer to Thee. Through our Lord . . .

Today is also the great feast of Saint Dominic, the Founder of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans). His zeal for the Catholic Faith has rang loud and clear throughout the centuries even into our own corrupt age. It was to St Dominic that Our Lady gave her Psalter - the Holy Rosary.

Commemoration of SAINT DOMINIC
During the first years of the 13th century, Dominic de Guzman, a young Spanish priest of noble birth, won the permission of Pope Innocent III to labor among the Albigensian heretics in France. He brought thousands of heretics back to the Faith, and nine of his women converts became the first Dominican nuns of the Second Order. In 1210 Dominic obtained papal sanction for his preaching order of men, thus originating the revolutionary "mixed" vocation, at once monastic and active. With inspired boldness he dispersed his Friars Preachers to centers of civilization in Spain, France, Italy, and Central Europe. He died at Bologna in 1221, leaving to his religious family a strong theological character and the great ideal of leading souls to the freedom of God by instructing them in truth. Tradition records a beautiful spiritual friendship with his contemporary apostle-founder St. Francis of Assisi.

O God, You have enlightened Your Church through the teaching and merits of the blessed confessor Dominic. May the Church never be deprived of help on earth, but always advance in spiritual growth through the intercession of Your saint. Through our Lord . . .
