Wonderful job done by San Miguel and Fairwood Elementary School! It was great seeing our Founder lead such great young musicians!

Playing the mouthpiece alone is not exactly like playing the instrument. But it is close enough to the instrument that there is marvelous transfer value. In other words, you can develop skills on the mouthpiece that can then be applied to the instrument, with the help of the imagination.

Carl has accumulated eight years of experience in the drum corps community between marching with the Vanguard Cadets (2011-2015), the Phantom Regiment (2016) and the Santa Clara Vanguard (2017-2018). Carl is no stranger to the podium either; he has served as the head drum major for the Vanguard Cadets for 3 years, has conducted at Phantom, and was the drum major for SCV in 2017 and 2018. Carl has also lead the Vanguard Cadets and the Santa Clara Vanguard to two Open Class and one World Class Championships, respectively. He now looks forward to helping students grow as humans and as leaders by returning for his third year with Silent Command.

When you play a brass instrument you must think buzz, buzz, buzz, and not blow, blow, blow. In a car, the engine moves the wheels. (It's not the gasoline moving the wheels). Your buzz is like the engine of the car.

You can never go by getting rid of what’s wrong in the playing. Go for what has to be right so the psycho-dynamics of this is very positive thinking about music. Music has sound, it has rhythm, sonority, emotion. You must actually go for the musical thoughts. If things don’t go perfectly, just try it again, but do examine your thoughts. What were you thinking when you missed a note? Correct your thinking, not your chops.

We had a lot of fun helping out the and band this week! Group of great kids! Watch out for them in WBA this season! Thank you again for having me out !
