Don't Let Your Thanksgiving Go Up in Flames
Thanksgiving is almost here! As you start preparing a delicious holiday feast, the San José Fire Department would like to remind our community to stay vigilant and practice fire safety when working in the kitchen. According to the National Fire Protection Association, there are more home fires on Thanksgiving than any other day of the year—and the leading cause of these fires is unattended cooking. To help keep you and your loved ones safe, SJFD has put together the following tips and resources: >> Never leave your stove unattended while cooking. Stay in the kitchen while you're frying, grilling, boiling, or broiling food. If you must leave the room—even for just a moment—turn off the stove. Stay in the home when cooking your turkey—and check on it frequently. >> Create a kid-free zone. Create a space of at least three feet around your stove and other areas where hot food or drinks are prepared. >> Keep your cooking area free of flammable materials. Keep anything that can catch fire, such as food packaging, oven mitts, and towels away from your stovetop. >> Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Handles facing outward are more likely to be bumped into and are easier for children to grab. >> Keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Make sure you have the correct type of fire extinguisher and know how to properly use it. >> Avoid turkey fryers: SJFD strongly discourages the use of turkey fryers, as they can lead to severe burns, injuries, and property damage. Grocery stores, food retailers, and restaurants often sell deep-fried turkeys, which can serve as a safe alternative to frying one at home. Earthquake Safety: Drop, Cover & Hold On
Earthquakes can happen at any time and without warning. The City of San José is especially prone to earthquakes due to its close proximity to the San Andreas and Hayward faults. That’s why the San José Fire Department would like to encourage you to take steps now to protect yourself and your family before, during and after an earthquake. Start by signing up to participate in the Great California Shakeout—happening October 21 at 10:21 a.m.—by visiting https://bit.ly/2021GreatShakeOut. The Great California ShakeOut is an annual earthquake preparedness drill in California designed to help residents practice and prepare for the next major earthquake. Join millions of Californians this Thursday as they “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” in their homes, schools and workplaces at 10:21 a.m. Everyone is encouraged to participate! STAY SAFE DURING AN EARTHQUAKE Disaster preparedness experts agree that "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" is the most appropriate action to reduce injury and death during an earthquake. Here is how to properly perform this procedure: —Drop: Wherever you are, drop down to your hands and knees. Hold onto something sturdy. If you’re using a wheelchair or walker with a seat, make sure your wheels are locked and remain seated until the shaking stops. —Cover: Cover your head and neck with your arms. If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath it for shelter. If no shelter is nearby, crawl next to an interior wall but stay away from windows. —Hold On: If you're under a table or desk, hold on with one hand and be ready to move with it. If you don’t have shelter, hold on to your head and neck with both arms. If seated and unable to drop to the floor, bend forward, cover your head with your arms and hold on to your neck with both hands. After your drill is complete, have discussions about what was learned and incorporate these lessons into your disaster plan. By practicing earthquake preparedness, you can help strengthen our communit
