Thanksgiving is almost here! As you start preparing a delicious holiday feast, the San José Fire Department would like to remind our community to stay vigilant and practice fire safety when working in the kitchen. According to the National Fire Protection Association, there are more home fires on Thanksgiving than any other day of the year—and the leading cause of these fires is unattended cooking. To help keep you and your loved ones safe, SJFD has put together the following tips and resources:

>> Never leave your stove unattended while cooking. Stay in the kitchen while you're frying, grilling, boiling, or broiling food. If you must leave the room—even for just a moment—turn off the stove. Stay in the home when cooking your turkey—and check on it frequently.

>> Create a kid-free zone. Create a space of at least three feet around your stove and other areas where hot food or drinks are prepared.

>> Keep your cooking area free of flammable materials. Keep anything that can catch fire, such as food packaging, oven mitts, and towels away from your stovetop.

>> Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Handles facing outward are more likely to be bumped into and are easier for children to grab.

>> Keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Make sure you have the correct type of fire extinguisher and know how to properly use it.

>> Avoid turkey fryers: SJFD strongly discourages the use of turkey fryers, as they can lead to severe burns, injuries, and property damage. Grocery stores, food retailers, and restaurants often sell deep-fried turkeys, which can serve as a safe alternative to frying one at home.

Hydroplaning is often caused by excessive speed in wet conditions. A general rule to follow when streets are wet is to reduce your speed by 1/3. This is especially true following an extended dry spell as oil and grease can rise to the surface to create slick roadways.

Stay safe, San José!

11/13/2023

With rain on the way, reminds everyone to keep yourself and others safe during wet driving conditions. Helpful tips include greatly reducing your speed, turning on your headlights, & replacing dry or worn windshield wipers. 🚗

Keep yourself and others safe on the road: don't drive drowsy. Similar to the effects of alcohol, a lack of sleep can affect your coordination, judgement, and reaction time. If you're feeling tired on the road, pull over to rest if you can safely do so or change drivers.

¡Feliz Día de los Mu***os! 🧡

Today we remember and honor former Fire Chief Richard Brown, who tragically passed away in 1910.

Chief Brown, who grew up in and around firehouses, was beloved by all and described as a “public official nearest the ideal.”

We hope you and your families continue the beautiful Mexican tradition of celebrating those we loved and lost with ofrendas.

It’s almost Halloween! 🎃👻

SJFD's Hazardous Incident Team (HIT) is equipped to handle all types of hazardous material incidents throughout San José. To ensure they're ready for anything and everything, they participate in quarterly trainings with other public safety agencies in Santa Clara County. This quarter's focus was on (1) recognizing the hazards that are present at a bomb scene, (2) identifying and classifying unknown chemicals using a field analysis system, and (3) Integrating drone technology into a disaster response plan.

10/25/2023

Help make this Halloween a fire-safe one. Keep decorations far away from heat sources, such as light bulbs and heaters. Avoid open flames—opt for battery-operated candles or glow-sticks in your jack-o'-lanterns. By taking simple fire safety precautions, you can help ensure your holiday remains festive and fun.
