Meet Aoife, one of our Fjällräven Field Grant recipients. We and The Explorers Club awarded Aoife the grant in 2023 to study how warming arctic temperatures are re-shaping bumblebee populations on Mount Nuolja in Northern Sweden.

"The field expedition to Mount Nuolja was an incredible and humbling experience. Conditions on the mountain could be stunningly beautiful but could change rapidly. One minute you might be admiring the reflection of the sky and other snow-capped mountains on the lake, then within an hour, you could be surrounded by fog, struggling to navigate. Arctic bees clearly need to cope with a highly dynamic environment, giving me a profound sense of respect for what they must continually overcome."

Aoife's data have been used in multiple theses, presented at three conferences, and inspired a review that was published in the journal Ecology Letters. It's work like hers that helps the world better understand our environment, and we're proud to support it.

Next year will be a big shake-up for the outdoor industry. Starting in 2025, brands will have to respond to new legislation banning the use of PFAS (nasty chemicals) from their collections.

We started saying no to them in 2009. Research showed these chemicals could be harmful to humans and the environment, so, we put the planet before profit and made some tough decisions to ensure our products were as environmentally friendly as possible. In hindsight, it wasn’t a tough decision. It was the right thing to do.
