I've been rocking 90s teenage girl hair this week and I'm wearing the teeny butterfly clips, and they are legitimately ones I bought in the 90s.

Talking about scalps today, Biolage has come out with a series of products designed for scalp issues: oily scalp, dry scalp, sensitive scalp, and dandruff.

Random facts from your geeky hairdresser obsessed with the science end their profession.

Btw, if you've been seeing scalp treatments being mentioned all over the internet and you're wondering whether it's something with legitimate benefits or just trendy hype, scalp treatments do have benefits. We used to do them all the time years ago. I stopped offering them at one point due to products from companies I trusted being discontinued. Now that it's become popular, quality products are available again and I am bringing the service back.

Now for some knowledge

1. The cellular renewal of the skin on your scalp is twice as fast as the skin anywhere else on your body.

2. The sebum (oil) production on the scalp is 40x that of your forearms

3.Various internal and external factors can result in higher sebum production. Examples include hormones, stress, pollution, and diet.

4. Contrary to popular belief, studies show that shampooing more often does NOT cause an increase in sebum production. But shampooing with a harsh shampoo can strip your natural oils causing your scalp to compensate by producing more oil.

5. The beauty industry sells products through hype and buzzwords. The whole hype about avoiding shampoos with sulfates is just hype. Sulfates help your product lather better which helps it spread better and also rinse out better. It's the quality of the sulfates that matter. Some are drying, some aren't. Some of the shampoos I use on myself (and I have bleached hair) contain sulfates. A shampoo can be sulfate free and still be drying.

6. Excess sebum buildup on the scalp can clog the pores and result in temporary hair loss.

Not gonna lie, when the last client of the day cancels, I'm not thrilled but I can at least console myself with getting to go home early. When it's the first appointment of the day that cancels, I just think about how I could have slept in 😍.

All seriousness though, we do understand when you have to cancel.

We would prefer no one cancels, but if someone is going to - let it be the last appointment.

Last year I spent a good amount of time reading books on the history of hair and beauty. Before the 20th century all beauty products were 100% organic. Because we didn't have the chemistry knowledge we have today. I hear a lot of folks talking about how we should start using things our grandmother used because it was more organic not understanding that grandma used what she used not because it was better, but because it was what was available at the time.

This book was really interesting, I haven't been a fan of organic beauty products since beauty school, and it really confirmed my love of modern technology in beauty products

My latest find. I am obsessed with antique hair gadgets made for helping to achieve finger waves. Particularly because I cannot do finger waves by hand. I couldn't get the hang of it in cosmetology school. After discovering that tools and gadgets were sold back in the 20s and 30s for folks who couldn't finger wave like me, I became obsessed with finding and collecting said items.

This one is a Supedo model electric marcel wave iron. It was made by the Marcelwaver Company of Cincinnati, this particular one was sold in 1929. In 1929 it sold for $6.50.

I've never seen a marcel iron like it before. It's designed to both make the wave pattern and the ridges.

I got lucky. Someone in one of the vintage groups saw it for sale, decided not to buy it, but shared it in a post in case someone else wanted it, and when I expressed interest, sent me the link. It was being sold for $6.95 plus $3 shipping. The seller specifically stated that the iron no longer worked (old wiring issues) but for ten dollars, I was fine with that. Just to be able to hold it and figure out how it was supposed to work was enough for me. It came in the original box and included the iron, detachable cord, instruction booklet, and an attachment you could use to switch the iron from electric to one that could be used with a stove. Sadly the original box fell apart right after I got it, but that's ok.

I was happy with it as is, but my husband was curious if it was fixable. He brought it into work and had one of the electricians look at it. They figured out the wiring problem, fixed it, and safety tested it, and the iron is now usable. I haven't had the time to pull out a mannequin head and practice using it yet (I will make a post when I do). But I'm really excited to have an antique working 1920s marcel wave iron that I got on a bargain.

I love this, so cute.

What do you think?

Oh, but before anyone asks, this is beyond my capabilities, I can't draw, it would basically look like a preschooler painted the flowers on. 😃

“I used No Yellow Shampoo to hand paint each of these daisies and then painted a custom blue shade on the remaining blonde hair. When it was time to rinse the hair the Fanola disappeared leaving behind the Pravana shades and VOILA!”

Summer Hair Trend Alert:

I am obsessed with butterfly hair accessories right now. I have been seeing hair butterflies everywhere lately and am loving the trend. I love hair accessories in general, they're a great way to dress up the hair without having to do a lot of styling and on hot summer days, who really wants to put a lot of time into styling.

My favorite hair butterflies weren't even meant to be an accessory. They were part of the centerpieces from a friend's wedding. She got the paper butterflies from a craft store, there is a wire attached. I just bent the wire, it slips right into the hair and I add a Bobby pin to keep it secure.

What are your favorite go to summer hair accessories?

is the artist.

This brought a giggle to my morning.

Happy first day of summer! 😅
