This afternoon, Performance Today will be sharing Festival Mozaic Artistic Director Scott Yoo's premiere Piano Quartet on today's show, from a concert presented this last summer in San Luis Obispo, California. Check it out!
Scott Yoo: Piano Quartet, Op. 1 Scott Yoo is many things: violinist, conductor, and Artistic Director of Festival Mozaic, to name a few, but until recently, he hadn't considered himself a composer. We are ONE MONTH out from our Artist-in-Residence weekend, and we're psyched to kick it off with a "Romantic Generation" Notable Insight on Friday, October 18. Plus, since school is back in session, share with local learners: Student Tickets are available by phone or at the box office - subject to availability, so don't delay! festivalmozaic.org
Join 2024 Artist-in-Residence, pianist John Novacek, for an intimate discussion of "Romantic" composers in-the-round. It's the perfect opportunity to *know before you go* to the Piano Recital on the 19th, or it's a wonderful way to learn more about these incredible pieces. Our Notable events make the material accessible and tangible. So, cozy up, and get to know Bach, Schumann, Bartรณk, and Liszt a bit better!
With Festival Mozaicโs help, Allan Hancock College recently unveiled a new Steinway piano, and we're thrilled for you to experience it first-hand at the John Novacek in Recital, 2024 Artist-in-Residence Series on Saturday, October 19.
For the last six months, we have been collaborating with the Allan Hancock College Foundation to expand Festival Mozaicโs artistic presence into Santa Maria and Northern Santa Barbara County. During Scott Yoo's visit to Boyd Hall in February 2023, where he presented a master class for Hancock students, we were all were struck by the beauty of the venue. However, Festival organizers noted to Hancock leaders that the hall needed a world-class concert piano to truly complement its elegance...
Allan Hancock College recently unveiled the stunning Patty Boyd Concert Hall, a state-of-the-art venue with 340 seats, built as part of the new Fine Arts Complexโa hub for cultural and artistic activity on the collegeโs Santa Maria campus. Patty Boyd, a dedicated supporter of the arts in Santa Maria, left the bulk of her estate to the Hancock College music department when she passed in 2012. Fortunately, part of Ms. Boydโs generous bequest had been allocated for just such a purchase.
Through his network, Scott Yoo located a 2018 Steinway concert grand piano available for sale in Utah. He connected the seller with Hancock College and, just a few weeks after Scottโs master class, the exquisite piano was delivered!
Festival Mozaic was honored to have musicians Alexander Hersh and Susan Grace perform the inaugural concert using this piano at the July 25th Midday Mini-Concert. The Santa Maria Sun covered the unveiling in an article last month, which you can read here: https://www.santamariasun.com/arts/allan-hancock-college-acquires-world-class-piano-for-boyd-concert-hall-15894150

For which are you most excited? Or, will any be new to you?
Dr. Alyson McLamore leads exciting and instructive lectures, complete with musical examples, prior to many of our concerts. She is a brilliant researcher who offers unique perspectives and engaging access points for audience members of any level to dive deeply into the context of each composition. This way, patrons who have new or advanced relationships with the featured music will have the chance to enjoy and appreciate each composer with fresh ears.
If you're not yet familiar with Dr. McLamore, the upcoming Artist-in Residence series is the perfect opportunity! Arrive early to the October 19 Piano Recital and enjoy a pre-concert lecture in Patty Boyd Concert Hall. Alyson will walk and talk us through Schumann, Bartรณk, Bach, and Liszt before 2024 Artist-in-Residence, pianist John Novacek, sits down to play.
Dr. Alyson McLamore won the Distinguished Teacher Award in 2002 as Musicology professor and teacher at Cal Poly. Besides music history and music education courses, she teaches classes in musical theater, film music and women composers, and she helps direct the Tournament of Roses Honor Band in Pasadena. She has published Musical Theater: An Appreciation (Prentice Hall) and essays in the Research Chronicle, New Dictionary of the History of Ideas, Music Observed, and Musica Franca. We are honored to have her write program notes and gives pre-concert talks at Festival Mozaic events.
Join her at John Novacek in Recital, 2024 Artist-in-Residence Series - tickets available here: https://www.festivalmozaic.org/show-details/john-novacek-in-recital
In exactly FIVE WEEKS, we are back at the CPAC with John Novacek! However, on October 18, join us for a unique experience *in the round* ...but what exactly does that mean? Well, the audience will literally be seated all around the designated performance space. Since traditional proscenium theaters often don't support creative seating options quite like this, we're thrilled to host the Notable Insight: Romantic Generation, 2024 Artist-in-Residence Series in the Experimental Theater at Cuesta.
You've probably seen shows on the CPAC Mainstage, but have you seen a performance in the E.T. black box? And yes, it is literally a giant black box. Highly transformable with adjustable seating, we can customize this venue with a piano in the center of the room. The perfect setting for an intimate conversation with 2024 Artist-in-Residence, pianist John Novacek, you won't find a bad seat in the house! We're so excited to dive deep into the "Romantic Generation" with you soon - don't wait to get your ticket: https://www.festivalmozaic.org/show-details/notable-insight-romantic-generation
Tomorrow is the last day to sign up as a volunteer before we kick off the Fall & Winter events! We are so lucky to have such an incredible team of volunteersโ only a fraction pictured here (but donโt they look great ๐คฉ). The time and energy they dedicate to our audience, organization, and musicians is truly unparalleled. We couldnโt do it without them.
And, since we produce events all over the county, yesโ we are absolutely seeking new friendly volunteers in North County and South County SLO! Learn everything and more on our website: https://www.festivalmozaic.org/volunteer
Since there are only a handful of tickets left (and none remain for the 2pm show), we want to share that there's no time to spare if you want to see 2024 Artist-in-Residence John Novacek at the Libretto! Advanced reservations required for 5pm in Paso Robles on Sunday, October 20.
Boasting an intimate and club-like feel, Paso Robles' newest live music venue, the Libretto, is home to a beautiful Steinway Concert Grand piano โ often called one of the best in the world by its players. Novacek will entertain audiences with a mix of classical, ragtime, jazz, and original compositions in this delightfully intimate concert.
