Old Wing Fat San Mateo
Wing Fat Chinese Restaurant has been a part of San Mateo since the 50s. It's famous for its BBQ Pork.
This page is all about the history of the restaurant, and a behind the scenes look. Any photos and memories about this place we grew up in is welcome.
Thank you all for the love and support over the decades. We enjoyed hearing stories about how our food brought much comfort and good times for families.
Last day is busy and we are running out of favorites. You still can come for some chow Mein, bbq pork fried rice, fried won ton, and fried prawns.
In addition to the restaurant closing, we are grieved to announce the passing of our father, who worked tirelessly from 1958 thru 1986. He was always greeting customers, passing out cookies to the kids. How fitting that this is the week he chose to leave this earth. Rest In Peace, Dad. You are once again dining at a table with Mom.
Wing Fat will only be doing takeout for last three days. Not enough help to handle all the customers coming in. Thx for your support!💗
This well written story expresses the sentiments of many Chinese restaurant kids. We will miss this block.

The 84-year-old Wing Fat Chinese Restaurant is closing. Many families are losing a home. Wing Fat is part of an earlier generation of Chinese restaurants, a counter serving relics of Cantonese American cuisine that are starting to fade away on the Peninsula.
We also have to liquidate the restaurant. Any restaurants need good and sturdy equipment, prepware. utensils and serving ware?
The last day of the restaurant will be July 24. So many memories. Here is one showing granddaughter number one "working" and pouring tea for her grandfather. Also notice that the shelves behind him were used not only to sell items, but as a stockroom. You can actually see the ingredients that go into the food.
A customer took this picture of dad and this said it all.
It may be gone but our memories are forever

My mother in the kitchen. Frying up some of the ribs for the sweet and sour.
Happy New Year! You knew if you came into Wing Fat, you would be greeted by my dad's warm smile.

Dad always had a smile for his customers, too
We found this ad from a Yellow Pages Archive. This was placed before zip codes and when the phone number was DIAMOND 4-0751. I think it still is that phone number today. The first phone number I remembered as a kid, even before my home phone number.
Here is a picture of Mom (she always blinked when the camera clicked) and Dad and the famous backward 'E' sign. Dad deliberately made the E backwards so that it would create some buzz and people will remember the sign. Apparently it worked!
