Last week I was invited to speak to a genetic counseling capstone class at UCSF about my experience with medical professionals throughout my life. I talked about what conservatorship means in regards to my medical decisions, the role of supported decision making with those in my life, and mostly how I want to be treated by the medical professionals I interact with at my appointments. It was a really good conversation that I hope gave them a different perspective as they go into their careers.

As a proud woman of Jewish decent, I am grateful for California Governor's message about the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. War and violence is not the answer to solving conflict, especially when it involves the loss of innocent lives, the destruction of homes, families and communities. It doesn't matter what side of this conflict you are on. No one wins in war. Let's please stand together and create a movement that is anti-war, anti-violence, anti-hate. Peace and love must prevail! We must stop the this horrible tragedy. My heart goes out to all of the Jewish and Palestinian civilians in Israel who are trying to survive, and are affected by this war. Sending love and healing and peace to all!

Last weekend my independent short film "First X' premiered at the Love Wins Film Festival for Voices Rising in New York. We were thrilled to be selected for the GLASS HEART AWARD by Jaret Martino, who is the festival organizer. We were the only film to receive this special award.

The audience loved the film and we are grateful to be one of thousands of short films selected for this festival. All of the films had really powerful messages and very meaningful.

Thank you for the honors! Getting this kind of exposure for the film helps elevate my mission of ensuring there is more accurate representation of people with disabilities in media.

Special thank you to everyone on cast and crew who made this possible.

I have some exciting news! My independent short film "First X" is being warmly welcomed by national and international film festivals! We will be premiering the film in New York on October 7th at the "Voices Rising Film Festival" followed by a Q&A and then again in early December at the Equality International Film Festival in Hollywood. I am so proud of this film because it normalizes the sexuality and romantic interests of an individual with Down syndrome. It's so important to see people with Down syndrome as wanting the same things out of life as anyone else. Ultimately to experience romantic L-O-V-E! Thank you to Love Wins Film Festival and Equality International Film Festival for being a fan of the film and its message.

**If you are in NY October 7th you can get a ticket to see my film https://www.plazamac.org/voicesrisingfilmfest The film was written and directed by Josiah Polhemus, and he will be there along with film crew member Peter Kangas to share their thoughts about the making of the film and its message.

I’m Disabled And People Have The Audacity To Tell Me This One Thing 07/31/2023

"Since disability isn’t going anywhere, it is imperative to understand that disabled people are human too and that the world is a better place with disabled people in it,” said Sarah Pfohl.

When I was younger, someone told me that I would “never want to be a parent.” I didn’t understand what they meant at first. And then, all at once, I knew what they were telling me about their beliefs about what I should or shouldn't do with my body. For years, I was sure that I was the one who decided not to have children. I no longer know if this is true. I’m Disabled And People Have The Audacity To Tell Me This One Thing "Throughout my life, this message was repeated continually to me by medical professionals, educators, friends and family."

Nicole Adler is an accomplished motivational speaker and equal rights advocate for the developmental disability community and LGBTQ. She is living proof that dreams can come true! After graduating high school with her diploma and delivering two commencement speeches at graduation, Nicole achieved a certification in communications and public speaking from the College of San Mateo, and is currently pursuing an associate's degree in communications and political science. With hard work, determination, courage and the loving support from her friends and family, Nicole is taking steps towards achieving her dreams of being a motivational speaker and role model for those with Down syndrome.

Her personal motto: Don’t let society and today’s culture, including discrimination and prejudice, hold you back from your identity. BE YOU! And demand the world see you as a human being first -- without labels.” Attendees who hear Nicole talk will leave feeling inspired to set goals and dream big because anything is possible!
