We’re so proud to share that City Council accepted the Older Americans Month (OAM) proclamation that we presented last night! It was our pleasure to acknowledge the contributions of older adults in our community during this month-long celebration.🎉

Throughout the month, we’ve been sharing some of the fun ways that we’re embodying this year’s OAM theme: “Powered by Connection” - from our weekly “Fridays at the Movies” to our Latino/Latina Discussion Group. This week, we’re highlighting a cool way we’re bringing youth together with our local seniors to not only celebrate Older Americans Month, but Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month as well! This month, our Youth Activity Council will be on-site at the San Mateo Senior Center to learn about the heritage of our seniors. Seniors will also be welcome to share a photo or a letter to add to our Heritage Cherry Blossom Tree, which will be up through Wednesday, June 15.🌸

✂️The ribbon cutting ceremony for City of San Mateo's Fallen Heroes Memorial is just one week away! Mark your calendars and be sure to join us in Central Park at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2024, to be one of the first to catch a glimpse of this meaningful new monument.

🇺🇸The memorial will be comprised of monoliths representing the branches of the U.S. Military, as well as the San Mateo Police and Fire Departments, each etched with the names of San Mateo residents who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country and community. When viewed from the nearby flagpole, the monoliths will align to form the shape of a poppy flower, an iconic symbol of remembrance inspired by John McCrae’s World War I poem, “In Flanders Fields.”

🏐Coed 6x6 Adult Volleyball League begins on June 14, with games on Fridays starting at 6 p.m.

🏀Men's Adult Basketball League begins on June 16, with games on Sundays starting at 1:30 p.m.

Both leagues meet at San Mateo High School and require a $800 entry fee per team.
