Beautifully crafted by Steve of a local woodworker.

Fun fact about this piece: our client works in manufacturing at a large tech company here in the Bay Area -- so they designed a special hinge. This has a "waterfall table leaf" -- there is a hinge mechanism so the waterfall can act as a table leaf to fit an additional 3 chairs.

with a simple defect -- a tree branch (knot) and a on the right side.

What is unique about this snapshot in time is how the vertical grain (consistent with the quartersawn cut from the sawmill) is interrupted by the tree branch.

On the lefthand side you can see how the grains (growth rings representing each rain year of the living tree) were distorted by the by the tree branch.

Since we're getting technical, the light grayish color around the knot is actually -- this will became gray-black when finished.

Vincent & Louis vision -- mak-huššištak -- is to:
"Work towards the restoration of Ohlone Indian culinary traditions as a part of the larger, ongoing effort that empowers with our rich cultural identity.

In order to create food that is truly Ohlone and representative of the values our traditional cuisine upholds we reconnect with specific food traditions of our community, both ones that are practiced by elders in our families, as well as restoring older food traditions that are preserved in ethnographic documentation recorded by our communities in 1920s and 1930s. Through these methods, we are able to restore food traditions and bring these values and foods back into our daily lives and homes."

Note: these are Vincent and Louis' words from their website -- to learn more visit the link below. makamham.com/valuesandvision

Vincent & Louis' vision and story -- to bring more awareness to Ohlone peoples, culture, and cuisine -- is only just beginning and we are grateful for the opportunity to help turn this idea into reality with so many other supporters. Big thanks to who coordinates so much behind the scenes.

Wondering what you can do to support Cafe Ohlone?

First, check out makamham.com/supportus or makamham.com/blog to learn more about what is going on.

More generally though: always talk about Ohlone in the present tense -- these are the first peoples to live here in what we now call the and have been living here for thousands of years.

are amazing in so many ways -- indeed is the largest tree by height in the world.

Also known as the these trees thrive in from dense thick fog coming off the living in a range that stretches from on the to the border of and

However, in the past 100 years many redwood trees have been planted outside of their typical habitat -- and when this happens, they can get really really big in the -- in this case the tree damaged the sewer pipes of the house on the right necessitating its removal.

That is why the Council works to educate the public about The Right Tree, Right Place movement -- that is, planting the right trees in our so they do not have to be prematurely removed or cause property damage as they mature.

Here at we never want to see a tree removed, though sometimes it is absolutely necessary in cases like:
•Property Damage
•Viewsheds (due to Planning/Zoning Ordinances)
•Redevelopment Projects
•Hazardous Situation (windstorm, mudslide, etc)

We believe that when or if a tree needs to be removed it should be put to its highest and best use as -- if you ever have a tree coming down or know of one coming down, please refer the property owner to our Tree Recycling Form at BayAreaRedwood.com -- there is a good chance we can help lower the cost of the removal by diverting the tree from entering the wastestream.

And if you're lucky and need wood for an upcoming project (fence, deck, etc) there is a chance we can create significant value by milling it onsite producing wood from your own tree for a fraction of the cost of lumberyard prices!

Solid wood furniture is an investment; it is not cheap because of all the work that goes into it from sourcing/felling, transportation, milling, curing, fabrication, and consumables. Similar to mixing ingredients and baking a cake, if one step goes awry it will greatly impact the finished product.

We believe in making quality products meant to last more than a lifetime -- these are heirloom products to be passed down for generations.

There will always be fads but will never fall out of style -- though it is a dying trade and we are doing our best to keep it alive and thriving.

The beauty of solid wood products is they can be tailor made to fit any style -- the question is what is yours?

This isn't just any dining table: it raised $7000 for local charities located in the the and at the 27th annual hosted at Vineyards in the heart of

Big thanks to Chris and Marie who graciously donated to support these local organizations doing great work -- in total the live auction raised $81,000 from 14 lots.

Lot 14 was a last minute surprise -- this handcrafted custom table -- including a behind the scenes of our warehouse and log recycling yard where Marie got to handpick the slab for her table.

About the :
This is one of the most unique pieces of we've ever seen. Very unusual root flare tapering from ~44" wide to 30" wide in only about 80" of length. The slab grew extremely quickly, we counted only about 30 growth rings, presumably because it was very close to a water source. There is a high amount of figure with throughout the entire slab.

About the organizations supported from the Livermore Valley Wine Auction:

The Quest Science Center is creating programs for local children, including mobile exhibits, after school programs, family science night and summer enrichment programs.

Note: we donated the timbers and sign at Quest Plaza in Downtown Livermore and work extensively with the organization!

Calico Center is a forensic interviewing program that provides a safe environment and trained professional for children and youth as they are interviewed in child-abuse and criminal investigations.

Exceptional Needs Network provides respite for parents and caregivers as their children with special needs attend summer/fall camp with trained professionals.

Reins in Motion is a program that enriches the lives of children with special
needs by connecting them with horses in order to promote healing and growth in
their daily lives.

Livermore Shakespeare’s “So Wise So Young” program brings interactive educational performances to second graders throughout the Tri-Valley.

Just like this at the sitting on a recycled swing, we've been patiently waiting for everything that is about to come.

This slab started as an idea in January 2021 when we saw 1900 eucalyptus logs in the from trees that were felled as part of the Claremont Canyon Evacuation Support Project for fire safety reasons.

We recycled approximately 30 of these logs and this is one of 10 projects that utilized material from the felled . We were told the material would be unusable by so many people despite them not having any experience working with it.

We didn't do this to prove them wrong, we did it because and is what the needs if we want to consciously utilize our planet's finite resources as we continue to build new here while destroying faraway lands in developing countries.

This is the beginning and we are just getting started -- first it was -- next it is

In this photo, George is holding his most recent creation -- a uniquely shaped with a handle finished with his homemade board butter made from food grade mineral oil and beeswax!

Each one of George's boards comes with a small metal tin can full of the board butter -- not only is it 100% natural and organic -- but it is a container too.

George's boards range from $150-$250 depending on the size and if you haven't smelled the aroma of a you have to stop by and check them out.

"True Cedars" as they are known are only native to the and the -- here in they are planted as in front of homes and businesses.

The most well known cedar tree is the which gets huge -- up to 15 feet in diameter and 100 feet tall. Unfortunately not many remain as they were logged beginning 2000 years ago in biblical times -- must have been aliens 👽

The tree these are made of is a close relative -- also from the Mediterranean -- and comes from the of

Despite having origins from across the world, this tree actually grew here in the -- more specifically in the (one of the valleys making up the ) of modern day -- and we diverted it from entering the in March 2020 when it was removed due to instability caused by wind damage.

That moment when you first open a log 😃

In this photo, an log is being milled into on the with the swing blade attachment.

The log is clearly a premium grade as there are relatively few knots (tree branches) visible in the face grain and it is very symmetrical meaning great dimensionsal stability and yield.

This tree was recycled from ArborTech on a removal they Fremont and they will now use the wood to build a through their landscape division!

This is a clear example of the which is important to reducing waste:
1) ArborTech's tree removal division fells the tree; we reduce the cost of the job by accepting the logs for free at our log recycling yard (normally they would have to pay for disposal at a facility)
2) We hire Golden State Portable Milling LLC, a professional company to process the logs into timber through a cutlist provided by our client
3) ArborTech's landscape division utilizes the as a building material.

create jobs and keep material from entering the wastestream -- upstream diversion is the way of the future -- not only is it good for the it saves money too -- just ask ArborTech.
