The DOL has proposed raising the annual salary-level threshold for overtime exemptions from $35,568 to $55,068, as well as updating the threshold every three years. The most affected industries would be Professional & Technical, Retail, and Health Care.

This rule could trigger various responses to avoid paying overtime:

๐Ÿค Hiring more part-time employees, gig workers, or outsourcing
๐Ÿค– Automating more manual tasks to avoid the need for overtime
๐Ÿ•’ Prioritizing work efficiency during regular hours

Workplace Violence Protective Orders allow employers to seek a judicial order to protect their employees from those who have committed workplace violence or threatened to do so. The Utah State Courts have added forms and instructions for filing a protective order to their website: https://www.utcourts.gov/en/self-help/categories/protect-order/work-viol.html

If someone has hurt or threatened to hurt one of your employees, caused or threatened to cause significant damage to your organization's property, or has made terrorizing, frightening, intimidating, or harassing actions/threats, we encourage you to look into this resource!

Long answer: While the impact of the Supreme Court's affirmative action ruling does not directly impact workplaces, for which discrimination is covered by Title VII, experts say the decision could have an indirect ripple effect.

What hasn't changed:
โญ Current laws prohibiting employers from basing hiring or promotion decisions on race or gender are unaffected.
โญ Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives to foster diverse and inclusive workforces are legal and encouraged by the EEOC.

What could change:
โญ There may be a decrease in college graduates from underrepresented backgrounds, affecting future workforce diversity.
โญ Some companies may second-guess their DEI initiatives due to fear of legal scrutiny and "reverse" discrimination claims.

What employers can do:
โญ Reassess DEI policies for legal risks and unintentional practices that disadvantage people based on inherent characteristics.
โญ Cast a wide net to create a diverse talent pool, and then make decisions based on individual qualifications, experience, and skills.

Coming back to work after a long weekend can feel disorienting and, sometimes, overwhelming. Here are some tips for getting back in the groove:

โญ Ease into the day by making a cup of coffee or tea, clearing your workspace, or catching up with coworkers.
โญ Block off the first couple hours of your schedule. Give yourself some breathing room to catch up before jumping into new tasks.
โญ Inbox overflowing? Star important emails to respond to today (filtering by sender can help). Delete junk or anything that doesnโ€™t need a response to reduce overwhelm. Respond to simple emails quickly to gain some traction; (canned responses are okay). Then tackle the remaining emails.

Tomorrow is International Human Resources Day. We'll be celebrating by taking off a regularly scheduled day off!

Jokes aside, this year's theme is "Shaping the New Future." As change accelerates, HR professionals play a key role in shaping future workplaces built on trust, inclusion, well-being, and sustainability.

We asked Danielle, the newest member of our team, how she believes HR will shape the future of the workplace: "Years ago, I had a negative experience with HR, where I felt I wasn't treated with dignity. That experienced ignited my decision to pursue HR as a career. I wanted to help create a future where everyone is recognized and treated with kindness. I believe that as HR professionals, we have the responsibility and power to act sensitively, to advance equitable and ethical behavior, and to encourage kindness. This is the only way workplaces are going to survive, whatever changes happen, because this is what employees need to thrive. I always try to remember that, regardless of who someone is, their behaviors, or their differences, people are people, and they deserve to be treated as such."
