Nothing here to look at ….
"A picture is worth a thousand words"
A single still image conveys its meaning or essence more EFFECTIVELY than a mere verbal description?!
As designers, every image we select provides a deeper, more complex meaning to our designs. We’re trying to elicit an emotion, a feeling ….
My favorite is nostalgia; longing for or thinking fondly of a past time or condition.
Hideaway offers a unique blend of indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a seamless connection that enhances the dining experience. Whether you prefer the comfort of indoor dining or the charm of al fresco seating, each option complements the other, ensuring a memorable dining experience that captures the essence of beachside culture.
We do some monkeying around (but it's also business), with a keen eye for curating eclectic finishes that elevate our design game to new heights!
If you've visited Hideaway PB did you spot the location of the wallpaper seen on this post? We love a good monkey moment.
Embrace retro charm with a seaside breeze at the outdoor bar! Festoon lighting dances in the wind, custom millwork evokes vintage dressers for bottle display, all against a backdrop of layered textures and materials.

"When the sun dips below the horizon, something in my soul awakens."
As the sun sets over San Diego's newest hot spot, beach goers and hungry surfers alike soak in the coastal charm. Cheers to unforgettable moments at Hideaway and greatdesign! 😉🖤🤙🏼
Transport yourself to the retro surf shack inspired dining room, where all design choices and styled elements are a delightful nod to the past. Be sure to admire our custom chandeliers, anchoring the space with timeless charm and dual function. Fabricated on a pulley system, the chandeliers are pulled upward to make space for the disco ball and dancing in the evenings. Who's ready to get their groove on?
This is the place!

Designing a '70s-inspired restaurant means not just sourcing art and artifacts, but curating pieces that invite touch and evoke nostalgia. From custom artworks to eclectic artifacts, every material is chosen to provide not just visual appeal, but a tactile connection that enhances the dining experience. Take a seat at the pizza bar to see these materials up close and personal.

A 1960s vibe, think retro-chic! Incorporate bold geometric patterns, vibrant colors like mustard yellow, avocado green, and burnt orange, and sleek, mid-century modern furniture. Consider adding vintage accents like vinyl records, lava lamps, and retro signage …. At least that’s what AI said!
We agree! There is a whole VIBE when it comes to the 60’s and 70’s (never mind all the s*x, drugs, and rock-n-roll) … from the counterculture, the civil rights movement, space exploration, women’s lib movement, and so much more.
These decades were characterized by social change, cultural upheaval, and a spirit of rebellion against traditional norms, leaving a lasting impact on society and shaping the world we live in today.
Let’s bring back that spirit of rebellion …

Hideaway, a local hangout with the vibe of a house party. Emphasizing its design to reflect the essence of Pacific Beach’s surf and skate culture. We're excited for the grand opening June 20th and to establish Hideaway as the prime beachside location for everything from intimate fireside chats to lively house-party gatherings. Guests can choose from cozy indoor lounges, outdoor bars, and flame-lit patios across 5,500 square feet at Hideaway.
To create SOUL in your restaurant it needs to come from more than “just” the decor. It’s the trifecta, the team, the experience created and the food & drinks! And speaking of food, the menu features shareable bar bites, wood-fired pizzas, sandwiches, and upscale dishes like Aguachile Halibut Sashimi and 12-Hour Braised Short Rib. Drink offerings include handcrafted cocktails, "Social Bowls," a selection of spirits, wine, and 30 local brews on tap at two full-service bars.
SOUL is important in any hospitality establishment; and it doesn’t just happen, it’s planed and works best with a foundational story!
Look up! Once the floor plan and seating layout is approved…. Next step is creating the reflected ceiling plan and lighting layout.
As an experiential designer, the ceilings are the second most important design element we use to influence behavior. Low ceilings with booths allow for more private conversations, while high ceilings are used for dance floors and gatherings.
Thats just scratching the surface when it comes to design psychology ….
When the restaurant doubles as a nightclub 🖤🤙🏼🪩 don’t forget the disco ball!
Once a floor plan /seating layout is approved, we start creating the overall look of the space. We use a lot of different software programs to describe our ideas to our client. Here we use 3D modeling to play with scale and proportions, we mix in lighting, furnishing, color and materials.

“Everything in there that you see is all pictures from Pacific Beach history from the ‘70s and ‘80s—Gordon & Smith boards, every single surf and skate guy that you’ve ever heard of has stuff in there,”
Quote pulled from San Diego Magazine about HideawayPB
We spent months! sourcing all the art and artifacts. We chose items for their nostalgic feel, reminiscent of a home. Items you’d hang on your wall of family, and friends. Paintings collected and handed down through generations. Trophies and diving gear (for your adventurous soul) 😉
This is a restaurant… but we’d like you to feel right a home!

My daughters 3rd grade class blasted this song when I was visiting today … what caught my attention was that every single kid sang it with all their heart! Why? Because they studied it! Whaaaa. They wrote a full report about it. 😳
They were learning what “metaphor” means … and it’s relevant! It’s actually relevant for our company and if you’re willing to take the path less traveled. It might be where you find the most fun! 🤩
🎼 I break tradition
Sometimes my tries are outside the lines
We've been conditioned to not make mistakes
But I can't live that way
Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find
Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten … 🎶

Materials, furniture, patterns and textures start to come together as we play with depth, color, and scale. 🎨 It's all about finding that perfect balance ⚖️.
While we adore retro vibes, let's face it, not everything from the past is practical. Vintage furniture may not withstand the hustle of a busy restaurant. But fear not! We're blending nostalgia with durability to recreate that 1970s charm in a modern, upscale setting. 🌊✨ Think major 70s vibes with all the luxury and sophistication of a 21st-century restaurant. 😎

Leave your answers below 👇🏼
1. How many drinking bars are there?
2. How many patios?
3. What was The Studio used for when the original owner lived here?
4. Are we showing the floor drains in this plan 😂 I bet you really wanted to know where those were!
5. Where do you want to sit opening night? 😉

As we ramp up on a design we gather a large quantity of inspiration images, materials and colors. We may like the shape of the archway or the texture on the walls. The colors and the scale, or the proportions and furniture.
Then we start curating …and curating … and sketching…
While designs may not be completely original, they can still be innovative and transformative, drawing inspiration from existing ideas and adding new perspectives or elements to create something fresh and unique … that’s the sweet spot of design and what our team aims for on every project!

🎶✨ Embarking on a journey through time with the crackle of vinyl under the needle and the warm embrace of 1970s melodies. Dusting off those cherished records, spinning them on the turntable, and letting the music transport us to another era.
There's something magical about the nostalgic crackle and pop, the soulful tunes filling the room, and the timeless beauty of analog sound systems. Here's to the adventures sparked by music and the nostalgia of days gone by. 🌟📻 🌈
Let’s dive into
Our narrative: In Pacific Beach, California, nestled amidst the bustling streets and sun-kissed shores, stands a house with a storied past.
Once the proud abode of a globe-trotting photographer and collector, the house became the go to surf shack when its owner vanished into the ether in the early 1970’s. Leaving behind only echoes of his adventures.
Decades passed, and the house witnessed the ebb and flow of generations until, in 2023, fate intervened. A restoration project breathed new life into its weathered facade, transporting it back to the vibrant hues of the 1970s. Now, amid the nostalgia-drenched interiors, a restaurant thrives, serving up not just cuisine but a taste of history.
As the sun dips below the horizon, casting hues of orange and pink across the Pacific, the doors of the restaurant open, inviting guests hungry not just for food, but for the untold stories that linger within these walls. And so, amidst the clinking of glasses and laughter, the house continues to weave its timeless tale of adventure and discovery, a beacon for those seeking to unravel its mysteries.
