Get to know a little more about this majestic bird the C-47 “Willa Dean”! (Swipe to see a before photo ⏪)
Lyon Air Museum’s Douglas C-47 was originally part of the U.S. Army Air Forces, the U.S. military aviation arm during and immediately after World War II.  In May 1945, the plane was sold by the Army Air Force to France.   Unlike so many other C-47s and DC-3s, this aircraft continued to fly for the most part unmodified.  In 1967, it again changed ownership, transferring to the Israelis. The plane continued service in Israel without major modification and was ultimately sold to the civilian market, where it found its way to Lyon Air Museum.
Rechristened “Willa Dean” in honor of the wife of the Museum’s founder, Maj. Gen. William Lyon, USAF (Ret), the aircraft now carries the colors of the 440th Troop Carrier Group’s 97th Troop Carrier Squadron, complete with D-Day Invasion Stripes.
The aircraft is powered by two 1,200-horsepower Pratt & Whitney R-1830 “Twin Wasp” 14-cylinder radial engines.  It is nearly 64 feet in length, 17 feet in height and has a 96-ft. wingspan.  During operations, it had a service ceiling of 26,400 feet.  As a military personnel transport, it carried a crew of three (pilot, co-pilot and navigator) and 28 troops.
Manufactured by the Douglas Aircraft Company, the Douglas C-47 Dakota (or Skytrain) was developed from the Douglas DC-3 airliner for use as a military transport aircraft.  More than 10,000 of the aircraft were produced across the United States particularly in Long Beach and Santa Monica, California.
The C-47 and its Airliner variant the, DC-3, has played and continues to play a vital role around the world, for passenger transportation and cargo.

Taking you all the way back to 1909 with the Miami Cycle Company “Racycle” 🕰️
It’s TUESDAY! You know what that means! Time for your Motorcycle of the week! Learn more about this bike!
Like many early motorcycles, the origins of the Racycle brand started with a bicycle manufacture. A Miami, Ohio based to***co company decided to offer a free bicycle to smokers who saved up coupons inserted in their to***co packages. At first, the to***co company outsourced the bicycles, but to save money, they started their own bicycle building shop in 1896 and soon became a major manufacturer. Their bikes were named for the Sorg To***co Company engineer Frank Ray. In 1905, they expanded to offer motorcycles, sourcing the Hedstrom (Indian)-designed machines made by Aurora Automatic Machine Company, Thor. Now incorporating an engine, it was called the Moto-Racycle, or Racycle.
The earliest Racycles could be called Indian clones, but by the time this 1909 model Racycle motorcycle was built, design paths had diverged from what Thor had been offering.
 .
The Miami Cycle Company of Middletown, Ohio was a premier bicycle manufacturer until 1909 and built Racycle motorcycles until 1911, when it bought The Flying Merkel Cycle Company and stopped building the Racycle.
 .
The Racycle has a single cylinder engine, connected to a single speed V-belt drive, with a twist grip operated clutch. Its current ownership dates back to 1960. It has received the prestigious Centennial award from the Antique Motorcycle Club.

We can’t believe we took our special creation “Willa Dent” to the Action Sports Arena at the OC Fair Demolition Derby 5 years ago today!
We took a 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis GS cleverly designing pieces and colors to match the C-47 “Willa Dean” complete with invasion stripes, star and bar, and the little red gas cap.
Though we didn’t finish first, we also didn’t finish last! 😃
