A Prayer for the State of Israel
Avinu she-ba-shamayim, O Heavenly One, Protector and Redeemer of the people of Israel: Bless the State of Israel, and all who seek peace. Shield it beneath the wings of your love, spread over it the canopy of Your peace; send your light and truth to all who lead and advise, guiding them with Your good counsel. Establish peace in the land and fullness of joy to all who dwell there. Amen. (Mishkan T’filah, CCAR, pg 377).

Dear Friends,
I do not usually send email on Shabbat. Today is an exception. This morning we awoke to the horrifying news from Israel that Hamas terrorists from Gaza infiltrated the border, took over a check point and other locations, wrecked much harm, havoc, destruction and murder, kidnaped Israelis back into Gaza.
Simultaneously, hundreds of rockets and missiles were fired from Gaza down throughout the Israel. This is the 50th secular anniversary of the Yom Kippur War, a war that took Israel by surprise. The attack this morning, too, took Israel by surprise. (Stay up to date on what is happening: https://www.timesofisrael.com).
Our hearts are breaking.
Please join with us in community and solidarity with Israel this evening as we gather for Simchat Torah at 6:30 pm and we'll pray for the peace of Israel. As the great Jewish medieval poet Yehuda Halevi wrote: "I am in the West, but my heart is in the East."
We affirm the message of the Reform movement sent out early this morning:
On this Shabbat Atzeret Simchat Torah morning, the day after the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War, our North American Jewish community woke up to the horror of Hamas’ brutal assault on Israel with hundreds wounded and at least dozens murdered. We stand in complete solidarity with the people of Israel, so many of whom are directly in harm’s way, and pray for all those who are defending the State. And we pray for the healing of the wounded, redemption for those captured and comfort for the many bereaved. All people of conscience must stand in solidarity with Israel.
Oseh Shalom bimromaiv, hu ya'aseh shalom aleinu, v'al kol Yisrael, v'nomar, Amen.
May the One who causes peace to reign in the high heavens, bring peace to us, all Israel, as we say together, Amen.
Shabbat Shalom and Chag Sameach,
Rabbi Sharon L. Sobel
Senior Rabbi

We will monitor the storm and as long as the lights are on at TBS, our doors will be opened for our members looking for a refuge from the storm.
Should you need assistance in getting to TBS safely or need pastoral care during this time, please call the TBS Office at (714) 628-4600. The TBS phone lines will be monitored by off-site staff, so please leave a message and we will do our best to get back to you ASAP if it is storm related.

Our theme this year is Strengthening Bonds. The format includes short essays, poetry, art and music. As Temple Beth Sholom approaches its 75th anniversary in 2018, we become nostalgic about our beginning and our history.
In 1943, during World War II, the families of 25 Jewish merchants in downtown Santa Ana met on Friday evenings, in a home, to hold Shabbat services. They became the first Jewish congregation in Orange County and, in 1945, occupied their first Temple building at the corner of Eighth and Bush Streets in Santa Ana.
