The Eastern Sierra - A Guide's Perspective
by Doug Rodricks
Introduction
The Eastern Sierra is known for its renowned fishing spots, such as Hot Creek, Lower and Upper Owens, and Crowley Lake. While these areas are familiar to many anglers, fishing pressure, runoff, and closures can sometimes require a Plan B. Our July 10th presenter, Doug Rodricks of Sierra Drifters Guide Service, will introduce both popular and lesser-known options in the region. His presentation will cover fly selection, rigging, trout care, rod manipulation, and capturing that special photograph. For boaters and float tubers, Doug will discuss recent advancements in electronics.
About Doug Rodricks
Doug Rodricks grew up in Southern California, spending summers in Yosemite National Park. His interest in trout fishing began at age nine, and by eighteen, he had taken up fly fishing. Doug has honed his skills over the years, learning from his mentor, Tom Loe, and eventually taking over Sierra Drifters Guide Service. He is known for his patience, outgoing personality, and effective teaching methods, making him a favorite among clients, from beginners to seasoned anglers.
Guide Service and Equipment
Dougâs 24-foot Ranger Bay Boat, equipped with a 250 HP Mercury Verado and cutting-edge electronics, comfortably accommodates up to four anglers on Crowley and Bridgeport reservoirs. Additionally, he offers a 17-foot Willie Drift Boat for three anglers on the Lower Owens River. Doug guides clients to the best rivers and creeks for large trout, using nymphing and streamer fishing techniques, and switches to dry fly fishing when conditions allow. In winter, he uses snowmobiles to access prime fishing spots for rainbow trout ranging from 19 to 25 inches.
Program Highlights
1. Locations: Doug will cover various fishing spots in the Eastern Sierra, focusing on both popular areas and less-pressured locations.
2. Techniques: Learn about rigging, fly selection, and effective use of modern electronics to locate and catch trout.
3. Rod Manipulation: Understand how to use the entire rod to play and land large fish quickly and safely, maintaining a 90-degree angle during the fight.
4. Trout Care: Proper methods for netting, handling, and releasing trout to minimize harm.
5. Photography: Tips for capturing high-quality photographs of your catch.
Doug Rodricksâ expertise and passion for fly fishing in the Eastern Sierra make his guide services avaluable resource for both novice and experienced anglers. His innovative approach and dedication to teaching ensure a rewarding fishing experience, helping clients catch trout and create lasting memories.

This month's presentation:
What Trout Like to Eat and the Flies to Feed Them
with Tim Flagler
The simple title sums up a topic that has been the subject of hundreds, if not thousands, of fly-fishing books and articles. We have all seen pictures of mayflies, stone flies, scuds and minnows and the fly patterns that imitate them. We cast those carefully crafted imitations, but mostly have no idea how the trout behave upon seeing our offerings. We know when they bite, but never see the underwater takes or refusals. Itâs a hidden aquatic world that always leaves us guessing.
Our June 12th presenter, master fly tier Tim Flagler is out to clear up those mysteries with ingenious and meticulously shot underwater videos. Using multiple high-definition cameras, these are of the same remarkable quality as his world-renowned fly-tying videos.
Tim Flagler has been fly-fishing and tying for more than 30 years. He founded Tightline Productions in 1998, a video production company that specializes in promotional and instructional video. He is known worldwide for his tying videos.
Timâs background in videography is evident as we see frame after frame of the intimate feeding habits of the trout. Witness the life cycle of an insect from nymph to dun in glorious high definition. Combine that with a witty and insightful commentary, and it makes a very special program. If youâve ever wondered how your flies behave underwater and how trout perceive them, you cannot miss Timâs truly amazing presentation.
Named 2022 Fly Tier of the Year by Fly Tying magazine, Tim Flagler has taken the fly-fishing world by storm with his high-quality videos and simple, clear approach to teaching fly tying. A native of New Jersey, Tim is a fixture at trade shows and attracts a crowd in the celebrity tying areas. When not traveling, he still guides his favorite waters in Central New Jersey.
An accomplished Euro nymph expert, his presentations on fly tying and travel have delighted and educated audiences around the world. Tim is a keen follower of the latest tournament-based
innovations in fly and rod design. Tim will share the fly patterns he uses to best imitate the variety of bugs discussed. Instructions on how to tie the patterns shared in this presentation may be found on
Timâs YouTube channel.

ICELAND â TRIP OF A LIFETIME
by Matthias âMattiâ HĂĄkonarson
You may have heard about how fantastic Iceland fly fishing is - a mecca for trout, salmon, sea trout, arctic char, and more. The health of the fisheries is incredible, and the scenery is simply mind blowing. With that information comes a reputation for being too expensive for the average angler.
This monthâs presentation will explore fishing packages from exclusive to DIY, to turn your dream into reality. If you are a keen freshwater fly angler, Iceland needs to be at the top of your list. The size and numbers of the fish in its rivers and lakes are nothing short of amazing. Throw in the scenery, the local culture, and the feeling of being in one of the most special places in the world (nature wise), and you really canât beat it. It is one of the last reliable salmon fishing destinations.
Matti HĂĄkonarson formed Iceland Fishing Guide in 2009 to host anglers from around the world to come to Iceland and make use of the experienced he has gained through his endless urge to explore new water in his home country. Born in 1981, Matti hails from the picturesque town of Akureyri. He is a skilled guide who devotes a significant amount of time to river expeditions each year, surpassing the average personâs fishing days in a decade. With a great sense of humor and a love for fishing, this former hockey player continues to inspire and lead others on unforgettable outdoor adventures. His company has grown a lot over the years and is now the proud lease holder on various rivers and beats in Northern Iceland with Myrarkvisl at the top of the list. Bear in mind that the beats on Icelandâs rivers are privately owned and leases must be arranged for river access.
Iceland Fishing Guide offers guided fishing tours to the premier lakes and rivers in Iceland. These work for beginners as well as experienced anglers, for individuals or groups. The guides are expert anglers and have extensive experience fishing in the area. They arrange the licenses needed for the fishing tour in advance and plan the tour itinerary. The season kicks off on April 1 st with the emphasis on large brown trout in any of the five rivers leased by IFG. Leave the nymph rod at home as dries, skated flies, soft hackles and streamers are the order of the day. Later in the season the emphasis shifts to Atlantic salmon and several rivers offer the chance to fish these with traditional Spey technique. The long summer evenings allow late night sessions long after darkness has fallen on American rivers. The season ends in late September. Iceland has much to offer the non-fishing spouse or travel companion. Horseback riding, hiking, volcanoes, thermal spas and of course the spectacular Northern Lights are but a few of the attractions.
Please mark your calendars to attend our May 8th meeting with Matti HĂĄkonarson.
