Hart Speech and Debate is a competitive team participating in various competitions throughout the academic year. Join us on Mondays in F43!
Congratulations to Owen and Allen for taking awards at the Spring congress. Owen took 5th in varsity and Allen grabbed a plaque for best written legislation.
League champion in Programmed Oral Interpretation (Thematic Interpretation). Going to State for her second year in a row. Congratulations, Ridley!
Fall Open IE 2022 at Granada Hills Charter, Ridley picket fences for the top spot in POI! So glad to be back in person!

State Quals IE this weekend. Took 4 competitors and 3 broke to finals! Zoe Titus took 3rd to qualify for State Championship in Programmed Oral Interp. Angela Ramirez took 4th place to qualify in Impromptu, and Kyla Jones took 5th to qualify in Original Oratory! So proud of these awesome competitors!
National Qualifiers was such a great tournament! Took 3 speech competitors and 1 congress entry. Kyla Jones went to finals in Original Oratory, Arin Rothschild in Informative, and Zoe Titus in Programmed Oral Interp. Kyla is going to National Championship!
Hart Speech had an incredible showing on the first day of National Qualifiers. All three entries have made it to finals in their events! So proud of this remarkable team!

It’s Qualifier time! Hart jumped into competition at the State Qualifying Congress tournament. 3 competitors and 2 broke to semifinals. Senior Zoe Titus grabbed 21st place for her showing in the semifinal round, and Chris Kim made it to finals and finished in 11th place. With 9 spots available to go to State, who knows what may happen in the shuffle to lock State spots!
My varsity speech kids finally strutted their stuff at the February 20, 2021 Open IE tournament. Senior Kyla Jones revived her hopes for another State tournament by placing 5th in Original Oratory, and senior Angela Ramirez took 7th place in Spontaneous Argumentation.
The TCFL Spring Congress tournament gave freshman Owen Rusk his next congress award with his 4th place finish in his house.
November 14 Congress tournament: Freshman Owen Rusk took 5th place in his novice house. Incredible skill development since the beginning of the season.
Despite the pandemic, Hart High Speech and Debate is still going strong! Doing Lincoln Douglas debate for the first time this year, senior Nicole Felici walked away with a winning record and taking a ribbon for her 2-1 record at the Novice Debate tournament on October 17, 2020

Hart High Speech and Debate is getting back into the swing of things. We’re preparing for online competition and seeing what this season brings.
This weekend Hart had an amazing time at the Congressional Debate Tournament at Saugus High School. Joe Brennan '19 earned 4th place in his novice house and Mary Gooneratne '17 earned 3rd place in her varsity house. Congratulations to everyone who competed this weekend!
Congratulations to Mary Gooneratne '17 on earning a Superior Certificate in Lincoln Douglas Debate last weekend at the Fall Open Debate Tournament at Taft High School.
On Saturday, October 31, 2015, Hart competed at the Novice Individual Events Tournament at Cleveland High School. Finn Kobler '17 placed 2nd in Original Prose and Poetry and earned an Excellence Certificate in Impromptu. Congratulations!
Hart High Speech and Debate's Team had a great start to the year at the Fall Congress Tournament, held at Hart High School. Congratulations to everyone who competed and thank you to everyone who made this tournament possible. Also, congratulations to the following team members on their remarkable performances:

As the season approaches championship tournaments, it seems to be a great time to acknowledge the team's success so far. First, freshmen Mary Gooneratne and Sabrina Pin made it to finals in Public Forum debate. Tommy Hart and Emily Horak also advanced into out rounds in public forum debate. Kaleb Branda, James Westerfield, Ino Chough, and Mino Chough all had incredible runs in public forum. Mary Gooneratne was one point away from breaking to semifinals in congressional debate. Emily Horak won the presiding officer contest. Emily also qualified 4th in original oratory but yielded her spot to compete as a presiding officer. Finally, Sabrina Pin qualified 5th in oratorical interpretation. Good luck to Emily and Sabrina in Modesto!!! The team is looking forward to national qualifiers at the end of the month.
Congrats to Hart Speech and Debate team members on a great Congressional Debate Competition this weekend. Sabrina Pin took home a 3rd place trophy in the novice house. Emily Horak received a third place trophy and a best presiding officer award in the varsity house. Tommy Hart won a 2nd place trophy in the novice house. Kaleb Branda also won a thrid place trophy in the novice house. Freshman Mary Gooneratne rounded out the team with 1st place in her novice house. Great job!
