Happy Mothers Day to All Mothers.
I'm pretty sure if you tried this today you would be wearing it. But this was from 1954. Different times.
What a Doll...........
Who remembers these?

Cadillac Sixty Special Fleetwood 1956 -
GM built 4 Cadillac Maharani models,
this is the lone survivor.
Instead of the front passenger seat, you'll find a toaster, refrigerator, hot plate, cutlery holder,
and, yes Virginia, a kitchen sink.
My favorite style.
Going to the shop today to do some work to prepare for the week and I am reflecting on this Holiday.
I've worked almost every Labor Day since I can remember.......Yeah I'm slowing down but
I still remember......
On Labor Day my Dad would have the day off from the plant. But did he rest?
No.
Did we go on a picnic or a day trip.
No.
Did we go to the movies?
Nope....
Instead we got up early and worked on one of the many projects to do around our house. I can remember asking him why he didn't rest on this holy day of rest for the laborer.
He just gave me this look and said "One day you'll have your own life and you'll understand."
"Now get me another gallon of paint from the basement."
To my Dad a "Holiday" was a spot you missed when you were painting a wall or door. It was his little joke to let you know you were sluffing off.
I understand.......
HOW IT REALLY WAS.........
Back then,
My Mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread mayo on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning.
Mom used to defrost hamburger on the counter and I used to eat it raw sometimes, too. My school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in ice pack coolers, but I can't remember getting e.coli.
Almost all of us kids would
have rather gone swimming in the lake instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then.
The term cell phone would have conjured up a phone in a jail cell, and a pager was the school PA system.
We all took gym, not PE... and risked permanent injury with a pair of high top Ked's (only worn in gym) instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors. I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now.
Flunking gym was not an option... Even for stupid kids! I guess PE must be much harder than gym was......
Speaking of school, we all said prayers and sang the national anthem, and staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention.
We must have had horribly damaged psyches. What an archaic health system we had then. Remember school nurses? Ours wore a hat and everything.
We thought that we were supposed to accomplish something before we were allowed to be proud of ourselves.
I just can't recall how bored we were without Android, I phones, the Internet, Netflix, Amazon, Computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations.
We actually passed handwritten notes in class instead of texts.....
Oh yeah... And where was the Benadryl and sterilization kit when I got that bee sting? Jeez. I could have died!
We played 'king of the hill' on piles of gravel left on vacant construction sites, and when we got hurt, Mom pulled out the 48-cent bottle of mercurochrome (kids liked it better because it didn't sting like iodine did) and then we got our butt spanked.
Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10-day dose of a $99 bottle of antibiotics, and then Mom calls the attorney to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat.
We didn't act up at the neighbor's house either; because if we did we got our butt spanked there and then we got our butt spanked again when we got home.
I recall Tommy Baker from next door coming over and doing his tricks on the front stoop, just before he fell off and sprained his wrist.
Little did his Mom know that she could have owned our house.
Instead, she picked him up and swatted him on the butt for being such a goof. It was a neighborhood run amuck I tell you......
To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family.
How could we possibly have known that? We were too busy playing baseball in the lot down the road and waiting for the ice cream man.
We didn't know we needed to get into group therapy and anger management classes.
We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even
notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac!
Yes, that was the way it was...
Did I leave anything out?
Of course, I did.
Feel free to add yours.
Lets go to hangout Daddyo
Lost in the 50s
A POEM THAT WAS US
A little house with three bedrooms, One bathroom and one car on the street
A mower that you had to push to make the grass look neat.
In the kitchen on the wall we only had one phone,
and no need for recording someone was always home.
We only had a living room where we would congregate,
Unless it was at mealtime in the kitchen where we ate.
We had no need for family rooms or extra rooms to dine.
When meeting as a family those two rooms would work out fine.
For snacks we had potato chips that tasted like a chip.
And if you wanted flavor there was Lipton's onion dip.
Store-bought snacks were rare because my mother liked to cook
And nothing can compare to snacks In Betty Crocker's book
Weekends were for family trips or staying home to play
We all did things together - Even go to church to pray.
When we did our weekend trips depending on the weather,
No one stayed at home because we liked to be together
Sometimes we would separate to do things on our own,
But we knew where the others were without our own cell phone
Then there were the picnics at the peak of summer season,
Pack a lunch and find some trees and never need a reason.
Get a baseball game together With all the friends you know,
Have real action playing ball - And no game video.
Remember when the doctor Used to be the family friend,
And didn't need insurance or a lawyer to defend
Because he took an oath and strived to do the best for you
Remember going to the store and shopping casually,
And when you went to pay for it you used your own money?
And remember when the cashier person had to really count?
There was a time when just one glance was all that it would take,
And you would know the kind of car, the model and the make
They didn't look like turtles trying to squeeze out every mile;
They were streamlined, white walls, fins and really had some style
Oh sure, we had our problems then, Just like we do today
And always we were striving, trying for a better way.
Oh, the simple life we lived still seems like so much fun,
How can you explain a game, just kick the can and run?
That life seemed so much easier slower in some ways
I guess new technology is ok But I sure do miss those days.
So time moves on and so do we and nothing stays the same,
But I sure love to reminisce and walk down memory lane.
With all today's technology they say that it's a plus!
But it's fun to look way back and say,
HEY LOOK, THAT WAS US!
Merry Christmas from "Lost in the 50s"
Who has used one of these, and remembers the nickname it was given?

I found a whole bunch of these Mercury man Key Chains in a garage last month while hunting for parts for my 1960 Starliner....
I have been selling some for 20.00 each, shipped free (only selling in the USA). I've been told I could get more but I thought that was a fair price for them.
They were cast from an original Hubcap over 25 years ago so that makes them vintage in my book.
They are made from pewter or aluminum I think. They don't attract a magnet. And both sides are 3D.
Here are some pictures
Are you interested?
If you just want to try one,
you can paypal me 20.00 shipped free only in the USA at [email protected]
