On October 23, 2023, author Jessica York of the Santa Cruz Sentinel published an article involving a wrong-way DUI driver. A woman “was arrested on suspicion of DUI on the weekend after driving the wrong way on Highway 1 and later crashing into a pole on private property” (York 2023). Good Samaritans called 911 to report the driver’s unsafe behavior – and due to their quick-thinking, CHP dispatchers and officers were able to respond quickly to prevent future potential accidents.

If you ever find yourself entering a roadway against the flow of traffic, it is imperative to back out and turn around when safe (DMV.ca.gov). If you see a wrong-way driver, you are encouraged to slow down when safe, pull over to the right shoulder, wait for the driver to pass, and call 911. And – of course – never drink and drive.

In late June of 2023, a 16 year-old was on his way to work in Soquel when a car driver struck his e-bike and caused him to double-over, injuring his knees (MSN: Daily Digest). According to the DMV, bikers are encouraged to “use hand signals before making turns or changing lanes to warn traffic,” to “ride in the same direction as traffic so you are more visible to drivers entering roads or changing lanes” in the bike lane, and to utilize light-reflectors at night for optimal visibility (DMV.ca.gov).
