Catalytic Converter Theft & Shooting Investigation | SCPD MEDIA RELEASE | On Wednesday, July 6, 2021 at approximately 5:37 a.m., Santa Cruz Police Department Officers responded to the 500 block of Frederick Street for a call of an interrupted catalytic converter theft and subsequent shooting.
A passerby witness reported seeing two male subjects underneath and around a parked Prius in an apparent attempt to remove the catalytic converter. The witness yelled at the suspects as they drove by and shortly after that reported hearing approximately three (3) gunshots as they drove away. It is unknown which of the two suspects fired the shots or the direction in which they were fired. Officers arrived on the scene moments later, where they located shell casings confirming the shooting; however, there was no evidence that anyone was struck by the shots. The shots were only heard by the witnesses, and it is unknown at this time of the suspect(s) intended target. Officers also discovered the suspects were successful in stealing the catalytic converter from the vehicle.
One male suspect was described as approximately 5'9" tall, and the other was wearing a flannel shirt. Both suspects were donning facial coverings (masks), and their ethnic descriptions are unknown at this point.
The suspect vehicle is believed to be a dark grey colored 2010-2015 Toyota Prius (stock photo attached) with an unknown license plate. The car was last seen traveling southbound on Frederick St. toward Broadway.
Santa Cruz Police Department Detectives are actively following up on leads, collecting and processing video surveillance and evidence collected from the scene. No suspects have been identified at this time.
SCPD is asking anyone with information about this case or video surveillance in the immediate area of Frederick St. and Broadway to contact Santa Cruz Police Department Detective Trueblood at (831) 420-5837 or email the video file to [email protected]. Anonymous tips can also be left on our Crime Tip Line at (831) 420-5995
About Catalytic Converter Thefts in the City of Santa Cruz
The Santa Cruz Police Department has recorded approximately forty-three (43) catalytic converter thefts in 2021. In many of those cases, it is believed the suspects are from out of the area. On at least one occasion, patrol officers attempted to stop a suspect vehicle which resulted in a high-speed vehicle pursuit leading officers over Highway 17 toward the San Jose area. Due to safety concerns, the pursuit was terminated, and the suspects were unable to be identified.
Catalytic converter thefts are not unique to the Santa Cruz area. Thefts of catalytic converters are due to the lucrative copper contained within, which fetch a hefty payout from second-hand dealers, scrap yards, or recycle centers. In some cases, catalytic converters are marketed online. Many law enforcement agencies within the Bay Area have collaborated or established task forces in an effort to combat these thefts. Despite these efforts, thefts continue to occur due to high demand.
The Santa Cruz Police Department is asking for help from the community to curb these thefts. Home video surveillance systems, motion-activated lighting, or parking your vehicle in a well-lit area help deter thieves. In addition, pro-active communication within your respective neighborhoods and reporting suspicious activity to police by dialing 9-1-1 is strongly encouraged. Anyone with information on these types of thefts is asked to contact Santa Cruz Police Department Investigations Section at (831) 420-5820 or leave the information on the Crime Tip Line at (831) 420- 5995.

HOW TO TURN YOUR VEHICLE REPAIRS INTO $100,000 IN YOUR BANK ACCOUNT
Having a vehicle is one of the necessities of life for many people. It’s especially important for people who live in rural areas where mass transportation options aren’t available. The problem is vehicles can be expensive when you buy them and repairs can seem like they cost even more sometimes. However, case studies show people who own their vehicles for a long time and take care of them properly may actually be saving up to $100,000 by doing so. Let’s look at how it works.
CHALLENGES OF VEHICLE OWNERSHIP
In 2019, the average purchase price of a vehicle was roughly $37,000. This number doesn’t include sales tax, registration, destination fees, any extended warranty coverages you choose to purchase and the amount of interest you will ultimately pay on the vehicle loan. Then in about five years, you can expect the vehicle to depreciate about 60% since the time you purchased it. Add up all of these numbers and the total comes to about $30,000 on top of the $37,000 purchase price. So, if you buy a vehicle every five years, you’re paying roughly $30,000 each time you purchase in addition to the cost of the vehicle.
BENEFITS OF EXTENDED VEHICLE OWNERSHIP
It’s not unheard of today for vehicles to surpass 250,000 miles worry-free. If you would keep your vehicle that long, it may take 10-15 years to reach the milestone. Looking back at the previous example of paying $30,000 every time you purchase a vehicle; you could be saving between $60,000 and $90,000 over those 10-15 years by simply keeping and maintaining your vehicle. The average car on the road today is 11.8 years old, which means vehicles in the United States can handle long-term ownership without worry. Although it’s nice to have a new vehicle to drive, weighing the cost and benefits of keeping your current vehicle wins out in most situations.
WHY REPAIRING YOUR VEHICLE MAKES SENSE
For every $1,000 you spend in vehicle repairs and maintenance, you’re saving upwards of $8,000 in major repairs. Whether you’re driving a new car or an older car, maintenance costs are necessary. However, by keeping your vehicle for an extended amount of time, the maintenance costs are much more bearable because you’re not paying the $30,000 every five years when you get a new vehicle. And when vehicles are made to last this extended amount of time without worry, it’s well worth keeping versus buying a new vehicle.
Think about what you could do with the money you’ve banked by simply holding on to your vehicle. You could enjoy it on a nice vacation, splurge on some other luxuries you enjoy, or invest it and save up for retirement. The money saved is yours and it’s a significant amount to work with. If you have any questions or comments about these numbers or how you can take better care of your vehicle, contact Micks Automotive at any time.
Last, none of this goes into how much greener it is to keep a car and not have additional cars manufactured.

Off the Wall
Mike, my son always wanted to go to MIT to get an engineering degree in aerospace. I feared the cost but never said a thing to him about it. I instead tried to get him to consider Caltech, where my connections at JPL could have given him a hand with an internship. But then he decided to attend Universal Technical Institute, to learn to be a diesel mechanic.
When I asked him why he said "I can make good money, it's a two year program, I'll get hired straight out of school. I'll save my money for five years or so, then go get my degree, and I won't have school debt when I graduate. And if I don't find the engineering job I want I can still fix diesels."
Then he added "Have you heard Mike Rowe talk about the skills gap? Someone has to fill it."
Today, my son is in Albuquerque, working for Peterbilt. He did get hired right out of school, and the school his loans will be paid off after one year of working. He was the top student in his class, by the way.
I wanted to thank you for setting my son on the path to success. Your words did it. Your work is more important than you know. Thank you again. Kender MacGowan.
Hi Kender
Your son is a genius, and so are you. A lot parents would have bristled at the idea of their brilliant child, "settling" for a two-year school, when MIT awaits. Many others would have discouraged them from learning a useful skill before going straight into a university. Good for you, and good for your son. I'm sharing your note because lots of other kids and parents are in the same position, and I want them to know we're awarding a million dollars in work ethic scholarships to people who think like your son. If you know any such people, please direct them here. mikerowe.com/scholarship.
Good luck to your son, and thanks again for the kind words.
