happy Friday! 🪴🌀Today we wanted to share these amazing spiral aloe with you (aloe polyphylla). They’re grown hyper locally by Alan Beverly, less than a mile away. We love supporting local, small scale growers who are passionate about their plants! 💚 Alan has dedicated his 40+ years career to perfecting the process of growing this aloe species by seed. His spiral aloes are unique because they show their spiral early on and have lots of variation between plants. Some have spines and some don’t, and the spirals vary as well. Come check them out and support local growers! 🙌🏻

This is your call to plants your winter greens ! 🥬🥦🥗 Brassicas like broccoli, kale, cabbage, cauliflower as well as lettuces, arugula, spinach, chard, and even cilantro do best when planted now as the weather cools off.

There are a few reasons why now is the perfect time:
- You won’t have as many issues with pests like aphids going into fall
- As temps get cooler plants concentrate sugars in their leaves which act as anti freeze - the result is yummier tasting greens
- they’re less likely to bolt

These iris rhizomes come directly from our resident iris expert, Sherry Austin!

If you’re noticing leaf damage on your rose plants, it could be caused by “rose slugs.” They’re not true slugs, and even though they look like green caterpillars, they’re also not true caterpillars. They’re sawfly larvae. Those are important considerations when selecting a biological insecticide to control them.

Spinosad is a good general-purpose natural insecticide that’s effective against rose slugs. We always recommend application shortly after sunrise or shortly before dark to prevent harm to bees. 🐝

Our roses are in full bloom… There’s nothing quite like a vase of home grown roses on the table!

We are definitely missing the sunshine this week, but the silver lining of these cloudy days is that they are perfect for planting! It’s easier weather to work in and it gives the plants an opportunity to acclimate to their new location in the garden.

We are fully stocked with a new shipment of citrus trees, and in by request, Gem avocado trees! Gems are more compact in size - perfect for small gardens. They’re one of the richest and creamiest avocados.
A helpful tip from Lance… it’s time to watch for leafminer on your citrus as their new soft leaves are emerging. Leafminers create distinct tracks or mines (hence their name) all over the leaf. We carry pheromone traps and natural pest control spray.
We also have good variety of deciduous fruit trees in stock - apples, pears, peaches, nectarines cherries and mulberries.

The break in the rain is a good time to direct sow wildflower seeds. So sprinkle away!
It’s also time to start your warm-season veggie seeds indoors and we’ve got everything you need for that!

Have you noticed all the beautiful tulip magnolias in full bloom around town? These trees are deciduous in winter, which really lets the bloom be the star!
We have a really nice selection and we’re excited to offer several varieties in the one gallon size as well. Not only is it more affordable for you, it also means A LOT less digging! 😅
Evergreen magnolia varieties in the nursery include ‘Little Gem’ and ‘Kay Parris’. They’re both terrific small to mid-sized tree options for smaller landscapes and they work well as privacy screens. Their glossy, dark green leaves with velvety brown undersides are beautiful year-round. Creamy white flowers are fragrant and gorgeous! 🤍
