Hock Shield

www.hockshield.com
Finally. Hock protectors that don't fall off. Starting at under $50. This is the Hock Shield solution.

For equines with hock injuries or bed sores, repeated lying down can aggravate the condition and prevent healing, creating sores that become larger and/or deeper. Healing cannot take place without a protective shield between an abrading environment and injured skin. The soft, flexible pocket in the center back of the Hock Shield provides comfort in the delicate area where the tendons pass just under the skin.

Bed sores in horses can happen in multiple places. Anywhere from fetlock, hock, knee, and even the hip! Our knee shields are a great tool to have at hand if your horse develops knee bed sores. However, they can also be a great addition or alternative to protection for wounds that occur for other reasons.
As horse owners, we are always prepared for the unexpected to happen. If you have ever had to use a standing wrap or some sort of bandage set up on your horses’ lower limbs, you know just how tricky it can be to keep those bandages on!
Our knee shield can be a great method of reinforcing bandaging around the knee area to prevent it from sliding down, being worn off, or the horse pulling it off.

Click the link in our bio to shop our variety of shields!
They can serve multiple purposes, and can be a great tool in your medical box.

Many horses suffer from sores on fetlocks, knees, and hocks due to weakened muscles that allow for lying down. Horses with arthritis or other physical ailments can be more predisposed to suffer from bed sores. Also known as pressure ulcers and pressure sores, bed sores can happen when there is friction or unrelieved pressure on these parts of the body during the process of laying down, rolling, or standing up. If your horse sleeps or lays down on hard terrain, this can also be a big factor in the cause of bed sores.

Fetlock shield is one of our solutions to sores developed on the fetlock area. They cover a larger area compared to most other products used. Fetlock shield is also safe for your horse to wear 24/7 or during turn out.
If your horse needs a bed sore solution, check out our range of products at www.hockshield.com

We even revamped our products to be styled with green trim if you like a little color in your life 😉

Meet Skuggalisa!!
She is a 17 year old Icelandic mare who was struggling pretty bad with some hock sores. Skuggs has metabolic issues and potentially arthritic issues at her age.
About 1 month ago, her mom Cathy reached out to us in search of a remedy… it’s safe to say that our hock shields work wonders!! 🙌🏻🤩

Have you ever wondered about the origin story of Hock Shield? Here it is straight from our founder and owner.
👇🏻👇🏻

“This is Taboo, a horse at the stable where I was boarding. He had developed a nasty hock sore from pushing SO hard with his left hock to compensate for his arthritic right knee. His owner, Joyce, purchased several hock protectors but none of them would stay up. This frustrating problem is one that had gone on long enough for many horse owners without a satisfying solution and I decided to take on the challenge.
Many designs and materials were tested and after several months Taboo’s Shield was consistently staying in place and his sore started to heal. He wore his Hock Shield 24/7 until he had a callous where a deep bloody sore once had been.”

Meet Tucker! We had to create a custom set of Shields for him because his sores went so far down his legs. It’s so wonderful to see how much healing these horses go through when they start using shields!

Here is Tucker’s testimonial:

“Thank you so much for making these Hock protectors. It sure does make Tucker’s life better. He loves them. Now he doesn’t have to walk with pain any more. When we go to feed, he stands there and wants to get them on.”

Meet “Ike” the Belgian Draft. He was our prototype tester for the draft size years ago. We had no idea how bad his sores truly were until we received his pictures and testimonial! This is what his mom has to say 👇🏻👇🏻

“I have an 18 hand 1800 lb Belgian draft horse and we have always struggled with hock sores. It’s insanely frustrating because I have tried literally everything you can imagine. I even went as far as using surgical glue to glue a strip of neoprene over the sore because no wraps would stay on. I spent hundreds of dollars on medicine and wraps, all to no avail. I felt horrible and didn’t know what to do. When I got the Hock Shield, I was immediately impressed with the simplicity of it. The best part was, it actually stayed on! For the first time, I had a product that actually stayed on and the healing could begin. Over 2 months, the wound went from being about 3 inches wide to the size of a quarter. Now it is completely healed. I keep them on him now as a preventative measure. It is the most important piece of medical equipment for my horses I own. “

We take so much pride in being able to create prototypes to fit the needs of different equines! Every customer means the world to us and if we can make a difference in your horses’ life.. that’s all that matters! 🙌🏻❤️

Here is one of the horses that helped in the development of our knee and fetlock shields. We are proud to say that we can help horses like him who suffer from these problematic wounds.

Pom is the horse in the video, he suffers from narcolepsy, diagnosed by his vet. This is a really difficult and very rare disease for both horses and owners to deal with on a day to day basis. You can see that the involuntary actions from his disease cause him to fall to the ground, forcing him to catch his full body weight on two major leg joints, the knee and the fetlock.
Sleep deprivation can have very similar symptoms. Sleep deprivation is much more common and is the result of an improper environment for the horse to acquire REM sleep.
The repetitive and involuntary movements from these issues cause major injury if not properly prepared for.

Do you have a horse or know one that could benefit from the protection our products have to offer? We would love to provide that extra support to both owners and vets who see and treat horses with these exact problems and diseases every day!

The Ultra is a full wrap to ensure coverage even if they have an extra hard way of twisting while pushing off the ground. It can also be used for horses with arthritic hocks to prevent chill. The thin neoprene and double layer of fleece make a very comfortable but tough boot that can be worn full-time for those horses with deep chronic sores.

Remember!
If a horse has a hock injury or bed sore, repeated lying down can aggravate it and prevent healing. Some sores just become larger and/or deeper. The healing process cannot take place unless a protective layer is placed between the ground and the skin.

How to attach a hock shield.
VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure the leg is straight under and the hoof is flat on the ground.
Put the side with the label on the outside of the leg.

Bring the elastic strap around the inside of the leg to the outside.

Pull the strap for a “snug” fit.

Lock top Velcro flap down.

Adjust the inside tab ONLY if outside tab is too long or too short.
