Banchan, the small side dishes that accompany meals in Korean cuisine, have a rich history that reflects the country's communal dining culture. Traditionally, banchan is served in multiple small portions to be shared among diners, creating a sense of togetherness and harmony at the table.
During a recent interaction with a guest, we had the opportunity to share the history and our offering of banchan. The idea that banchan is always complimentary is a common misconception. In Korea, while some restaurants do offer banchan as part of the meal without additional charge, this practice varies widely depending on the type of establishment, the region, and the quality or complexity of the dishes. Banchan may be considered part of the amuse-bouche offerings, reflecting the chef's creativity and the restaurant's culinary philosophy, which is what we do at Alkemē.
We carefully craft our banchan to complement and enhance the flavors of our main courses, treating them as an integral part of the dining experience. Our banchan offerings are designed to introduce guests to a broader range of flavors and culinary techniques, reflecting the heritage and reimagined cuisine.
