In Istanbul, the Basilical Cistern is known in Turkish as Yerebatan Sarnıcı, is a vast and ancient underground water reservoir located in Turkey. Constructed during the reign of Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century, it is one of the largest and most impressive cisterns beneath the city. The cistern lies near prominent landmarks such as the Hagia Sophia and the Sultanahmet Mosque, deep within the historical heart of Istanbul.

Spanning an area of nearly 9,800 square meters, the Basilica Cistern measures approximately 140 meters in length and 70 meters in width, with the capacity to store up to 80,000 cubic meters of water. Its architectural beauty is highlighted by 336 marble columns, each around 9 meters high, arranged in 12 rows of 28 columns. These columns, featuring a mix of Ionic and Corinthian styles, suggest that some were repurposed from older structures. The cistern's vaulted brick ceiling is waterproofed with a thick layer of mortar, creating an otherworldly ambiance as it reflects in the shallow water below.

Commissioned by Emperor Justinian I and completed in 532 AD, the cistern was designed to provide a water filtration system for the Great Palace of Constantinople and other buildings on the First Hill. Water was sourced from the Belgrade Forest, approximately 19 kilometers north of the city, via the Valens Aqueduct and the Thracian peninsula’s water system. This engineering marvel highlights the advanced capabilities of the Byzantine Empire in managing and distributing water.

Among its unique features are the two Medusa head sculptures used as column bases. These heads, believed to be repurposed from Roman-era structures, are positioned sideways and upside down, adding to the mysterious and enigmatic atmosphere of the cistern. The dim lighting and reflections of the columns in the water create a surreal and serene environment, which has made the Basilica Cistern a popular location for movies, including the James Bond film "From Russia with Love."

Just returned from an incredible journey through Halong Bay on a 2 night cruise! The serene waters were dotted with charming cruise ships, each one illuminated softly against the backdrop of majestic limestone islands. The evening sky was a moody blend of blues and grays, adding a mystical touch to the already stunning landscape. The gentle glow from the boats reflected beautifully on the calm waters, creating a tranquil and mesmerizing scene.
