Solace preventionists, victim advocates, forensic interviewers, therapists, administrative staff and DA office employees, stood in solidarity for Denim Day. The day started with appreciation for our Multi-Disciplinary Team and a presentation about Denim Day and prevention for sexual assault awareness month and child abuse prevention month. We could not do this work without our community and what a great way to celebrate Victim Right’s week. For more information, go to denimday.org and here’s a quick synopsis.
Since 1999, Peace Over Violence has run an inspiring and powerful opportunity to practice solidarity and support survivors by renewing our commitment to exposing harmful behaviors and attitudes surrounding sexual violence. Denim Day is a campaign on a Wednesday in April in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The campaign began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a sexual assault conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped the person who sexually assaulted her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence developed the Denim Day campaign in response to this case and the activism surrounding it. Since then, what started as a local campaign to bring awareness to victim blaming and destructive myths that surround sexual violence has grown into a movement. As the longest running sexual violence prevention and education campaign in history, Denim Day asks community members, elected officials, businesses, and students to make a social statement with their fashion statement by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest the misconceptions that surround sexual violence.

Solace's Education and Prevention Manager, Mary Beth, presented to St. Johns College staff and student Resident Advisors as part of their training before January Orientation.
The presentation on how to respond to a disclosure of sexual assault was wonderful and full of great conversations that left the E&P team on a high as they left the beautiful snowy campus.
This is the second year Solace is able to offer this presentation and we are so grateful for this collaboration and to SJC staff ensuring their campus community is informed.
