There’s a difference between a cowboy and a cowboy singer. Being a working cowboy doesn’t necessarily make you authentic as an artist. Hank Williams Sr. and Waylon Jennings never worked cows a day in their lives. They definitely weren’t bull riders either. And though they’re considered untouchable voices enshrined in classic country gold, folks might be surprised that they were anything but welcomed in country music early on. People thought Hank was singing the devil’s music and over sexualizing rural sounds. Waylon stated himself that he was called a hipster and told to cut his hair before he even grew it out. Hard to believe I know, but they were controversial. People who opposed integration thought that Elvis Presley was some kind of anti-Christ for even sounding a little bit black. Ray Charles was also accused of Devil worship for what people saw as sacrilege for fusing gospel with R&B and taking it to the mainstream. There’s a lifetime to spend on the question of secular versus sacred music. The commercialization of folk music spread around America by itinerant musicians and the publishers who decided it could be copy written in the first place. I myself never really considered genre or album sales charts until I found myself with an agent and a distributor. And I wasn’t knocking on their doors. They came looking for me. I think amateur realism is being marketed as authenticity by groups of people who, in many cases, have no moral standard beside the dollar. To me, authenticity is hard won through trials tribulations. Perseverance in the face of indifference. I’ve always said that I don’t do this for the money, though it sure helps. Please don’t misunderstand me. There’s a lot of ways to do your thang as an artist or an entertainer. I don’t want to judge, though as public figures we are subject to judgment. I’m no authority on anything really with the exception of how I handle myself and treat people around me. Im not the first or the best but I’m different. I’m just me.
