It's time for some Friday night real talk on the tropics.

You need to know that there's a tropical wave out there in the central Atlantic that *might* eventually threaten the Gulf coast in the September 9th to 13th window. You may even come across some computer model images showing a powerful hurricane slamming into Texas or Florida or anywhere in between. The truth is it's impossible to say for sure what this thing will do and exactly where it will go, but it's worth staying aware of for now.

Why? Storms that tend to ride westward through the Caribbean in the first half of September also tend to turn northward into the Gulf of Mexico.

Don't latch on to any single computer model solution for now. One of them might get lucky and eventually proven to be right, but they all lack skill in creating reliably accurate forecasts this far out.

The other thing we're watching over Labor Day weekend is the low pressure disturbance spinning off the upper Texas coastline. It's not impossible for it to spin up into a tropical depression or named storm, but the end result is likely the same: Plenty of showers and storms flowing into Texas and Louisiana. Keep the umbrella hand this holiday weekend, and rest assured we're keeping a watchful eye on the tropics for you. Thanks for putting your trust in our team to calmly steering you in the right direction during hurricane season. We don't take that trust for granted!
