Fra Diavolo (brother devil) was the nickname given to a mischevious boy who dressed as a monk during religious ceremonies dedicated to improving the health of sick children in Naples - the boy went on to become a famous leader of insurgents against French occupiers. The name stuck to Lobster/Shrimp Fra Diavolo in Italian/American restaurants across America even though it is rarely seen in Italy. So if you would like to say a prayer for sick children of friends, family or oppressed regions - order this delicious pasta and toast Michele “Fra Diavolo”

Spicy shrimp Fra Diavolo (brother Devil) has a sensational backstory. It was named after a rebellious Napolitan boy who paid tribute to the patron monk of sick children during sunday religious ceremonies. His fiery nickname played out in later life as he became a leader of Italian insurgents against French occupiers. The dish - lobster Fra Diavolo - has become a mainstay of Italian American menus since the legendary Rat Pack hangout Grotta Azzura (1908) popularized the dish in Little Italy NYC in 1940. Fra Diavolo is the dish to eat while praying for sick children of friends and family or in distressed parts of the world 🙏☮️

While Marsala wine - sweet and dry - is from the beautiful seaside town of Marsala - the origin of the dish is shrouded in mystery with rumors about Maria Carolina of Naples and Sicily (sister of Marie Antoinette) importing French chefs because the local cuisine was not up to court standards. In the end, this was adopted by the Italian-American community and indeed this wonderful dish is on almost every US menu but rarely found in Italy
