Celebrando Black History month
It is Black History Month. This year's theme is African Americans and the Arts. We will be showcasing some amazing black birth artists, our black faculty members, and some of our members. We will also share how all of us can make a difference.
Why celebrate Black History Month? The contributions of African Americans to our history and culture are important. By taking the time to look at history through a perspective that isn't always highlighted helps us to grow and understand ourselves and others. There is still so much to learn.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, exclusive breastfeeding is recommended during the first six months of the baby's life, since this represents health benefits for both mother and baby.
California specifically has made significant progress in recent years promoting exclusive breastfeeding in hospitals, and although many women start out with the intention of exclusively breast-feeding their babies, nearly one-third of them eventually introduce their babies to formula before they leave the hospital.
Research has shown that breastfeeding babies can reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes, and asthma as well as lower the chance of heart disease and cancer in mothers.

California Hospitals Urge Moms To Favor Breast Milk Over Formula Exclusively breastfeeding babies for at least six months is widely viewed as a significant health benefit. White moms are more likely to do so than blacks, Asians or Latinas.
A Doula provides physical and emotional support before, during, and after childbirth. Different research shows that a Doula’s support is associated with healthier pregnancies and babies.
The good news for families in California is that this year, for the first time, families can now hire a doula through the state's low-income health insurance program. This is great new for all families since traditional private health insurance plans do not typically cover doulas, and for some families, acquiring a Doula is simply out of reach.
Nishtha Patel, manager of special programs for Medi-Cal ensures that in California, “members who are pregnant will get everything they need to have a healthy pregnancy, have a healthy baby, [and] feel confident in the care they receive.”

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has FINALLY updated its policy statement on Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk to align with the World Health Organization (WHO).
This is the academy’s first update on the policy in the past decade and though we’re seeing a lot of reaction and misinformation on social media and news coverage regarding the policy change, we're here to share the facts.
We must be careful not to take the AAP’s position out of context.
“The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for approximately 6 months after birth. Furthermore, the AAP supports continued breastfeeding, along with appropriate complementary foods introduced at about 6 months, as long as mutually desired by mother and child for 2 years or beyond.”
“Mutually desired by mother and child” is key here. Not every family can or wants to feed human milk to their child, and those families deserve the same compassion and quality of care as chest/breastfeeding families.
Having the country’s leading pediatrics association explicitly support breastfeeding for “2 years or beyond” is critical in fighting the belief that feeding human milk after 6 months is unnecessary or indulgent. This also strengthens the argument for federal law to expand its workplace protections for lactating employees beyond its current 12-month limit.
We encourage you to read the full policy statement. We're sharing the 10 Key Recommendations in the images here.
Aside from alignment with WHO, we appreciate the acknowledgement of the critical role pediatricians play in supporting lactation and the equity issues and lack of social support that contribute to the gap between families’ chest/breastfeeding intentions and outcomes.
We agree “pediatricians are ideally positioned to serve as breastfeeding educators and [should] not solely delegate this role to staff or nonmedical or lay volunteers. Pediatricians’ direct communication with families that breastfeeding is a medical and health priority can increase initiation, duration, and exclusivity.”
As a human milk feeding and lactation organization that applies a racial equity lens and reproductive justice framework to our work, we believe the inclusion of recommendations regarding adoption, surrogacy and gender-diverse families is important in the policy update.
By providing such clear guidance in its policy statement and technical report, the AAP has provided a roadmap that any health care provider can use in supporting the families they serve in achieving the feeding experience they envision. In light of this statement and its recommendations, there is no excuse for a health care provider not to be knowledgeable of the benefits of lactation to both parent and child and skilled in supporting family feeding decisions.
It also opens the door for all of us to contact the pediatricians in our communities with an invitation to partner in achieving these recommendations.
