Santa Monica College Choirs welcome you.
Whether you are looking to see what concerts are coming up or to see what you need to do in order to join one of our groups, thank you for checking us out.
Duke Ellington said the Sacred Concerts might be the most important work he did. We look forward to sharing tonight’s performance with you!

Happy Pride Month! At Santa Monica College, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for students, staff, faculty, and community members today and every day. 🌈
The collaboration of two conductors and four music ensembles showcases performances from each of the ensembles, using excerpts from Duke Ellington’s three Sacred Concert settings as the centerpiece to celebrate the merging of music from the jazz club with the profundity of sacred ideals. Situated within the context of the Civil Rights Movement, Ellington’s jazz voice is infused with the sounds of the Black church and layered in subversive texts and subtexts.
Tonight is the night! See you there!

The Eye of the Hurricane
Words and Music by Sherry Blevins with Santa Monica College Choirs
Partially quoting America, the Beautiful by Samuel A. Ward (1848-1903)
Wildfires burn,
they scorch the earth
the ashes fall like rain.
The torrid air is stifling,
the sky is rimmed in red.
The alabaster cities glow,
we watch with dry eyes.
Alarms they blare
we cannot hear,
The world cries in despair!
Oceans rising, why can’t we see
the song of nature is out of key?
Poisoned water, why can’t we see
humanity is suffering?
Species dying, why can’t we see
the song of nature is out of key?
Heat is climbing, why can’t we see
humanity is suffering?
Raging tempests, why can’t we see
the song of nature is out of key?
People crying, why can’t we see
humanity is suffering?
Do something!
Do anything!
Is anybody listening?
You’re thirsty now,
You close your eyes
and drink the acid rain.
The glaciers gone,
You carry on,
yet still you feel no shame.
The earth it cracks beneath your feet
Were all our cries in vain?
Your comfort numbs,
You choose to live
in the eye of the hurricane.
