Partially quoting America, the Beautiful by Samuel A. Ward (1848-1903)
Wildfires burn,
they scorch the earth
the ashes fall like rain.
The torrid air is stifling,
the sky is rimmed in red.
The alabaster cities glow,
we watch with dry eyes.
Alarms they blare
we cannot hear,
The world cries in despair!
Oceans rising, why can’t we see
the song of nature is out of key?
Poisoned water, why can’t we see
humanity is suffering?
Species dying, why can’t we see
the song of nature is out of key?
Heat is climbing, why can’t we see
humanity is suffering?
Raging tempests, why can’t we see
the song of nature is out of key?
People crying, why can’t we see
humanity is suffering?
Do something!
Do anything!
Is anybody listening?
You’re thirsty now,
You close your eyes
and drink the acid rain.
The glaciers gone,
You carry on,
yet still you feel no shame.
The earth it cracks beneath your feet
Were all our cries in vain?
Your comfort numbs,
You choose to live
in the eye of the hurricane.

SMC Chamber Choir Sings for DACA
On Tuesday November 12th, as #DACA was being heard in the Supreme Court, the SMC Chamber Choir, including Dr. Jeremiah Selvey, participated in a 'walk-out/sing-out' in solidarity with their fellow students affected by this case both on campus and around the country. We performed selections from Melissa Dunphy’s "American DREAMers" which features texts from five young Americans who were brought to America as children, in a work that honors their story and inspires hope, empathy, and action. Our video includes excerpts of two movements, and we will presenting the entire work at our Holiday Concert in December: https://www.facebook.com/events/2215272088770258/
Also on our campus, the Santa Monica College DREAM Program offers counseling and workshops to boost students' academic, professional, and personal growth, and can assist Undocumented and DACA students with applying for the California Dream Act as well as Financial Aid/Scholarships. They are currently offering appointments to help students renew DACA on Thursday 11/21! Visit: http://www.smc.edu/StudentServices/DREAM-Program/Pages/default.aspx
