"Wheel of Fortune” Lights Up Santa Monica Pier with New Host Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White 08/31/2024

Santa Monica, CA — The iconic Santa Monica Pier was buzzing with excitement tonight, Friday, August 30, 2024, as "Wheel of Fortune" fans gathered to celebrate the upcoming season of America’s favorite game show. The event marked the official start of a new era, featuring the show’s fresh host, Ryan Seacrest, alongside longtime co-host Vanna White.

The Pacific Park Ferris wheel, known as the world’s first solar-powered Ferris wheel, was transformed into a giant "Wheel of Fortune," lighting up the night with a dynamic display of over 174,000 energy-efficient LED lights. This unique spectacle drew fans from across Southern California, eager to witness the launch of the show's new chapter.

Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White greeted fans, posed for photos, and shared in the excitement as they kicked off the celebration. Vanna White took the first spin of the 85-foot Ferris wheel, which had been specially adorned to resemble the famous game show's wheel. The crowd cheered as fans were invited to try their luck spinning a giant version of the "Wheel of Fortune" set up on the pier.

Pat Sajak, who stepped down from his hosting duties last spring, was notably absent, but his spirit was felt throughout the evening as the crowd welcomed Seacrest to his new role. Attendees left with free "Wheel of Fortune" T-shirts and smiles as bright as the Ferris wheel lights.

Pacific Park, the West Coast's only amusement park located on a pier, provided the perfect backdrop for the event, combining the thrill of its 12 rides, including the iconic West Coaster, with the excitement of the game show celebration. As the sun set over the Pacific, the pier became a beacon of light and laughter, heralding the next chapter in "Wheel of Fortune's" storied history.

The new season of "Wheel of Fortune," with Seacrest and White at the helm, promises to bring fresh energy and entertainment to fans across the nation. As tonight's event proved, the wheel keeps turning — and so does the love for this beloved game show.

In a show of community engagement, four Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers participated in a friendly basketball game with local residents at the Venice Beach Basketball Courts on Friday, August 30, 2024. The officers showcased their athletic skills in several games of "21," a popular street basketball variation known for its dynamic, individual style of play.

During the game, a resident approached the officers, explaining that his phone had been stolen and tracked to a nearby location. Demonstrating their commitment to the community, the officers quickly agreed to assist, immediately stopped playing basketball, and escorted the resident to the location where the phone was last pinged. Despite a thorough search, the phone could not be found.

The event highlighted the LAPD's ongoing efforts to build positive relationships with the community, blending moments of friendly interaction with a readiness to respond to local needs.

Santa Monica Police Impound Minibike After Pursuit and Driver's Arrest 08/30/2024

On Thursday, August 29, 2024, Santa Monica Police officers arrested a minibike rider at Ocean Front Walk following a reckless driving incident. The rider, who was seen driving erratically on Ocean Avenue, failed to comply with a traffic stop initiated by the officers and attempted to flee. A pursuit ensued, and officers apprehended the suspect a few blocks away near Ocean Front Walk at Santa Monica Beach.

The minibike, which lacked registration and a license plate, was impounded by police. Minibikes, often referred to as pocket bikes or mini-choppers, do not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and therefore cannot be registered or operated on public streets due to the absence of necessary safety features and equipment required by law. The rider is likely to face charges of evading police and failure to stop for law enforcement.

A homeless man was found sleeping on the sidewalk of Rose Avenue in Venice on Wednesday, August 28, 2024. Next to him, a sign prominently displayed the message, "JESUS THE WAY THE TRUTH THE LIFE JOHN 14:6." The sign references a verse from the Bible where Jesus declares, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.”

This scene highlights the ongoing struggles of the homeless community in Venice, juxtaposing a message of faith with the stark realities of life on the streets. Rose Avenue, a street known for its eclectic mix of trendy establishments and visible homelessness, continues to reflect the complex social issues facing the area.

Efforts to address homelessness in Venice have included various outreach programs, yet the visible presence of those without shelter serves as a reminder of the persistent challenges. The man’s choice to display a religious message suggests a personal connection to faith in the face of adversity, offering a poignant commentary on the human condition amid the urban landscape.

Santa Monica Firefighters connected with local residents during "Coffee with a Firefighter" at Starbucks on Colorado Avenue on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.

🌕 This morning, August 19, 2024, the Blue Full Moon, a magnificent Supermoon, set over Santa Monica Pier, creating a mesmerizing scene.

A Blue Moon refers to the rare occurrence of a second full moon within a single calendar month. Despite its name, the moon doesn’t actually appear blue. The term "Blue Moon" is more of a figure of speech, signifying something that happens infrequently.

This particular Blue Moon is also a Supermoon, which means it’s closer to Earth in its orbit, making it appear larger and brighter in the sky. This celestial event is especially captivating, as it combines both the rarity of a Blue Moon and the enhanced visibility of a Supermoon.

Venice Beach Crackdown: Police Clamp Down on Illegal Biking on the Boardwalk 08/17/2024

On Friday, August 16, 2024, Los Angeles Police Officers were stationed along the Venice Beach Boardwalk as part of a newly formed task force aimed at educating the public and enforcing the no biking rule on the boardwalk. The initiative comes in response to a recent severe electric bike accident that left a child unconscious after being struck by a youth rider.

Around a dozen LAPD officers, including two sergeants, were strategically positioned across the boardwalk to maximize visibility and ensure compliance. The task force's primary focus was on preventing accidents and promoting safety by redirecting cyclists and pedicab operators to the designated bike path.

Speaking to Santa Monica Closeup during the enforcement, LAPD Sergeant Decoite explained, "We're out here today doing some education to keep bikes and pedicabs off the boardwalk for safety reasons. It's all about community safety."

He further added, "We're redirecting all bicycles and similar vehicles onto the bike path where they belong. We're focusing on education today, with the hope that we can limit citations and just inform the public."

The enforcement aligns with Los Angeles Municipal Code section 63.44 B16, which states, “No person shall drive or ride any cycle or vehicle, whether powered by a motor or human power, except on paths, roads or drives designed and provided for such purposes.
