A very soft but loving launch to our KPSRO PRIDE clinic - the first in our region! Excited to expand our dedicated services to Sonoma County and its LGBTQIN+ community as well as another love filled Transmasculine and NB cervical cancer screening event. Gender Affirming Care Saves Lives! 🌈🌈🌈❤️.
Our new intern class staying bright and colorful after a long day of OSCEs yesterday!
Start of our new garden beds! ☀️🌱 grateful for the sun and spring and the faculty/staff that provide the support to make this happen.
Foot and Ankle Surgery Rotation: when a model is needed to help an ortho tech practice casting, Marissa R2 had the opportunity to volunteer! We are grateful to get to learn with some of our amazing sub specialists and participate in the care they provide our patients. The foot and ankle department is a joy to rotate though!
Happy Match Week!
Residency may be busy but residents make time to stay connected with each other, including partners and furry/human kids! We also care about residents and faculty connecting with our wider communities, and advocating for social justice both locally and globally. R3 Thomas Dowlearn just returned from Peten Guatemala where he and our amazing Dr. Kate Feibusch (founder and director of Peten Health) taught POCUS to the lay community health workers caring for the majority of the community’s healthcare needs. Additionally, our residents recently got together to discuss and advocate for current humanitarian causes. As physicians, we can use our power and privilege to advocate for those who have no voice. This can take the form of reading and educating ourselves about current events, writing letters to elected officials, voting, providing direct care/education, and more. Part of our mission at KP Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency is to train leaders who will help transform the health, and health equity, of our communities. This means taking positive action to better support both our immediate communities and beyond.
📸Photo Quiz Friday!!

Sipping our way through residency in 2024…
Happy New Year! 🎊
Wishing everyone a happy and healthy Thanksgiving. 🍁 🦃 Grateful for our dedicated residents and the impact they make on patient care.
Some scenes from the resident’s recent Friendsgiving after Thursday Didactics last week.
Curricular Highlight: Simulation and POCUS training 🪡✂️🩻
Our residents learn essential procedural skills throughout the 3 years including: LARCs, joint and musculoskeletal injections, I&Ds, laceration repairs, toenail removals, cryotherapy, skin biopsies, endometrial biopsies, and colposcopy. Inpatient procedures we teach include lumbar puncture, para/thoracentesis, central lines, circumcision, intubation, and more!
We’re grateful to have a state-of-the-art simulation lab with mannequins and trainers to help residents hone these skills. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training occurs throughout different rotations (EM, MSK, OBGYN) with specific training sessions during didactics and Capstone. Additionally, each resident is loaned their own handheld ultrasound to use throughout residency!

🍄Why KPSR? I chose KPSR for it's people. I instantly connected with the residents & faculty at the AAFP conference in 2022, & felt it was the first time in medicine that I had truly been seen. Since joining the KPSR family, I have continued to feel valued and do not regret picking with people in mind.
👾What do you do for fun? I tend to be an ambivert: I can be very good in social situations or relating to people, but I need quiet alone time to recover. So as boring as it sounds, fun for me is good food or coffee, a book to read or notebook to write in, and sitting outside. Calming and nurturing moments are rejuvenating and fun for me! With an occasional video game session, of course!
💃🏻Fun Fact: I am trained in 5 types of dance, 1 being unique to the Southern Black community & created by Historically Black Colleges & Universities.
Love research? We’ve got you! 🔬🧬🧫
We have an amazing dedicated Research Project Manager with dedicated time, mentorship, and funding for QI/PI, community-based projects, and retrospective data analysis utilizing KP’s amazing database. We get support from the KP Division of Research. Plus, residents and faculty get funding to support their scholarly work and present their research findings at conferences!

🎗️Why KPSR? The integrated approach to patient care with emphasis on the ability to provide comprehensive full spectrum care in my community.
🚴🏻♀️What do you do for fun? Mountain biking, hiking, and attending my two young kids soccer and baseball games.
🎨Fun Fact: I have lived in Sonoma County for the last 14 years. I acquired my motorcycle license before I received my driver’s license. I tutored organic chemistry for two years prior to medical school.
We ♥️ learning and Pre-clinic huddles!
We start every clinic half-day with a 20 minute huddle. Majority of the time we review different clinical topics of the month including Board Review. We regularly schedule mental health “check-ins”, Heart Math, and population-based management as well.
These huddles are led by faculty/preceptors, residents, and even our awesome Sub-i’s!
📝Never stop learning 🤓

🍍Why KPSR? I did a sub-I here during my fourth year of medical school and loved it! Everyone from the residents, attendings, and staff were so friendly and supportive. I feel like KPSR is the perfect place to learn, grow, and provide comprehensive care for all.
🍀What do you do for fun? I like being in nature whether it’s through hiking, camping, or going on leisurely strolls through the neighborhood. I also enjoy singing and playing my guitar and ukulele. When I have less energy, I love taking care of my plant children, watching travel videos, and reading.
⚡️Fun Fact: My dad and I almost got hit by lightning at Bryce Canyon National Park!
We love volunteering at our local food bank during capstone week! Filled with tons of bonding and laughter and 4,469 # of pears bagged for delivery to help make 3,724 meals for our community! 💕

🍉Why KPSR? I am so excited to be joining the team at Kaiser Permanente Santa Rosa. The quality of care provided within the KP system is incredible and I am grateful to be a part of it. I’m also happy to be able to live in such a beautiful place, work with all the fantastic staff, and be a part of this community.
🥾What do you do for fun? I will do just about any outdoor activity. So far in Sonoma county, I have done a ton of hiking and visiting the coast. It’s incredible how much there is to do around here. I also do a lot of crochet so look out for me in my homemade sweaters this winter!
🚗Fun Fact: I still drive the same car I learned to drive in!
Meet Trix, our Medical Center’s Canine Companions facility dog!
Already won the resident’s hearts. We love you, Trix ♥️🐾
💉🏥Curricular Highlight
PGY-1 Miryam and PGY-2 Kevin on inpatient medicine preparing for a paracentesis!
We have a broad range of activities on inpatient medicine, including point-of-care-ultrasound; procedures; and rapid responses / codes. Residents are comfortable working as hospitalists upon graduation. Bonus pic of one of our three resident workrooms, flush with large windows for sunlight and a real moss wall!
Living in Sonoma county means you’re a quick drive from the rugged and scenic Northern California coastline. 🌊
Most residents live in Santa Rosa, which is a ~25 mile drive to the coast where the possibilities for outdoor fun are endless! From driving down Highway 1, hiking, beaches, coastal redwoods, paddling and kayaking, to having some delicious oysters and clam chowder - there’s something for everyone including families.
