I am doing a solo set at the Vaquero Show Saturday 11/11 at 3:30. Big time trade show, bit and gear makers, artists and all sorts of demos all weekend! Sunday, Steve and I will be playing a few songs during the cowboy church service and then a full set right after. There are also mule-drawn carriage rides starting at 11:00. Come on by! There is an admission fee for the trade show but not for the service on Sunday morning.
We play tonight 9/16 at It’s Danish Days this weekend in Solvang so town will be hopping. Come get you an ableskiver and some mwedisterpolse. Lederhosen encouraged! Thanks Micheal Cobb for the bitchen flyer!
I know of a pasture the mustard plant has overgrown
It’s somewhere I go on my own
A place to harvest all the wildest of hopes I have sown
Somewhere to be alone
Under a sherbet sky
Alone…with a good horse between my thighs
Alone…I sing to the birds and ride
I’m somewhere to be alone
Can you imagine a place that you call your own
Chez somewhere to be alone
A magical cabin the ivy has overgrown
Devine somewhere to be alone
Under a sobbing sky
Alone…with your guitar up on your thigh
Alone…swing on the porch and sigh
You’re someone to be alone
Way out in the desert where the wild horses long to roam
You guessed it
There’s a rock and hammer so you can destroy your phone
And create somewhere to be alone
Under a Jupiter sky
Alone…with your good dog beside your side
Alone…sleep by the river wide
You're somewhere to be alone
Give me somewhere to be alone
I need somewhere to be alone
Give me somewhere to
Be.

My dad’s side of the family traces back to the Irish pirate queen Grace O’Malley (1530-1603) She was a warrior, a shrewd and just clan leader and a regular folk hero. In short, she was kind but didn’t take s**t from anyone. She even stood her ground when face to face with the queen of England! Clare island was her home when she wasn’t out at sea. My aunt resided on Clare for some time in the early 2000s (a 4,000 acre island with less than 200 residents and twice as many sheep) and I hope to visit there one day. It’s not too early to start celebrating St. Paddy’s Day and dad’s been on my mind a lot lately. Here is a piece I’ve been developing that I hope to have recorded with a real orchestra one day. I imagine it being the musical score for some lithe red-headed swashbuckler out on the windy seas and headed to far-off lands. Well anyway. It is named O’Malley.
Mele Kalikifreakinmaka to all the cowboys/ cowgirls and ranchers (and anyone really) out there in the freezing world. It is supposed to be 73 degrees here on Cali’s central coast this weekend. My hat is off to all those folks working their asses off to feed their families and the rest of the world! Praying you and all your animals “make it through December.” Here is a Hawaiian Christmas tune Steve O and I recorded last year for his family back east. It seemed apropos. 🌴🎄 Sending rays your way!
Sawhorse Saturday with my velociraptor/ pony and sweet Dolly. This was not my best take but the only one in which Egg Nog did not chase the dog or knock over my guitar case or p**p on camera. 😂Gotta hand it to him. Equine sarcasm is his speciality! Song credit: Pony written by Kasey Chambers 🎼🎶
Past the Point of Rescue written by Mick Hanly. Starring my one eyed gelding Little Hawk and my self-employed dog Dolly. ❤️
It is about two months away from clipping season here in Cali. But plenty of old horses need some help during the hot days. Very satisfying to bring them relief. I will sometimes sing while I clip if there isn’t a breeze. But this is the first time I’ve been serenaded! This young lady was practicing for her upcoming recital. Sassy little mini horses!
The second photo is a friend’s old high school rodeo horse. He is 38 years old! Couldn’t resist using him as a shelf for my iced tea.
The Fjord works at a therapeutic riding school and has PPID. She is a sweetie.
9/10 if someone walks by a person that is body clipping, they will say “you could make a whole other horse out of that hair”. Or “you missed a spot” if you are working on an Appy. Dad jokes. 😂
Fun times ahead!

Hay! I’ll be flying solo (no dog or pony either) at the Sunday 7/31. There is a nice breezeway and seating in the shade. That’s where you’ll find me from 2-4! Thank you to for helping me dress, for the nourishing and organic products and for keeping my hay barn full!
Jamming at Steve’s back in the day. Will be sending wishes of luck, good health and happiness to Jaybird and Dougie tonite from the and missing the talent and all the sweet sarcasm from these guys. 🎼The Lucky One Written by Robert Lee Castleman🎼. Steve and I play from 7-10.
Bring your dad! Bring your dog! I’ll sing lovely and lively songs to you on the porch.
