Iconic artist Rembrandt van Rijn flourished during the Dutch Golden age, creating dozens and dozens of sketches, etchings, and paintings, but he only ever painted one known seascape, known as Storm on the Sea of Galilee. Did you know it’s also a self-portrait? If you look closely, you’ll see the face of the artist staring back at you from the canvas as one of the sailors on the wind-tossed boat. Unfortunately, the painting was stolen in 1990, and its whereabouts remain unknown to this day.

Did you know that Paul Cezanne is sometimes called the Father of Modern Art? 🍉That’s because he was a forerunner to the cubism of Picasso and an impetus to the abstract art of the 20th century. Pictured here Nature morte de pêches et poires by Paul Cézanne once owned by the Impressionist art dealer Ambroise Vollard, and not been seen by the public for 40 years.

I have always loved fruit. The colors, the shapes, the smells- it’s all intoxicating and lures me in every time I walk by an aisle of fresh produce at a grocery store. But what does that have to do with art? Well, not much really unless you think about how artists use these natural elements as inspiration for their work, me included.

TIP: Not to worry if all the photos you have of your fur baby are poor or older quality. That is the beauty of this style. But for those of you think you may do this in future - please take a nice photo while you are thinking of it.

One of my favorite things to do when I visit a new city is to find all the public art. But, that can be a problem when you’re not familiar with the local districts, neighborhoods, and nightlife.
So, I grab my smartphone or mobile device. I can easily search for Public Art Displays and find maps, addresses, and all the details I need to check out the local art scene and locate public art displays. Try it the next time you’re traveling!

Today I'm featuring Mequitta Ahuja’s vivid figurative canvases consider multicultural heritage and the construction of identity. They focus on a cast of enigmatic characters—usually women of color—and incorporate scenes of artmaking and images of canvases within canvases. Mequitta Ahuja (born 1976) is a contemporary American feminist painter of African American and South Asian descent who lives in Baltimore, Maryland.

Happy Birthday, Berthe Morisot! Morisot was one of the few women who was included in the famous group of Impressionists that included Monet, Manet, and Degas. Her beautiful paintings show how well she could interpret emotions and light. Her husband sacrificed his own ambition in order to manage her artistic career.

What if the starting point for an interior design scheme could be your favorite flower? Following my own advice as I consider my open floor plan kitchen and dining room, let's consider paperwhites, let's say. Noticing the colors you see can start to turn up some interesting accent opportunities.
We know there are so many versions of white, cream, off white - etc. and standing at a bank of paint chips makes that abundantly clear. Having an inspiration piece can keep you coming back and focus your design choices.

Did you know the color black doesn’t feature on a traditional color wheel? It is generally considered a non-color, as it absorbs all the other visible spectrum colors. When using the color black in my paintings, I often use other colors to darken the hue of my colors. Adding colors like purple or green can create a richer visual dark color.

John Singer Sargent was a master of using light and dark values to create realistic as well as romantic portraits. He fused realism with impressionism to become one of the leading portraitists of all time! I love the roughly painted four little girls in white pinafores in this one whose image resolve when you move away from them. He is masterful at putting in enough detail and leaving a lot out. I used to go and visit this room often with my student membership during a year off in college.

Every pet has a story, and their individual personality is always so much fun to capture. The best part of being an artist is bringing the memories of your favorite four-legged friend to life.
