In the 1960s, Warren Platner saw an opportunity. “I felt there was room for the kind of decorative, gentle, graceful kind of design that appeared in period style like Louis XV, but it could have a more rational base instead of being applied decoration,” he said. Starting at the floor, Platner created a chair that comes up and envelopes and supports the sitter—resulting in a form that’s complementary to the person sitting in it, and to the surrounding environment.

Womb Chair and Ottoman
Designed by Eero Saarinen in 1948, the groundbreaking Womb Chair defied the era’s conventions of what a chair could be, both in the techniques and technology that allowed for its form, and ultimately, in its nonprescriptive function. Its acceptance of all postures speaks to the primal comfort of the womb—the security of which Eero believed people yearn. Upon its release, the designer remarked, “Now, more than ever, we need to relax.” His words, and the Womb Chair, remain as resonant today as ever.

Born to architect Eliel Saarinen and textile artist Loja Saarinen, Eero Saarinen grew up surrounded by design. He studied sculpture in Paris, architecture at Yale, and design at Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he and Florence Knoll became lifelong collaborators and friends. Eero designed many of Knoll’s most iconic pieces, as well as several architectural triumphs worldwide.

The Original Design
The chair debuted in 1948 as the Model 70, and Eero Saarinen filed a patent for his “shaped chair.” Its organic form and liberating comfort earned it the name Womb Chair and spurred a quick ascent to the cultural zeitgeist.https://www.knoll.com/shop/en_us/living-lounge-chairs/womb-chair-and-ottoman/9097.html

Saarinen Round Dining Table in Espresso Marble with Cesca Chairs
In his purist approach to architecture and design, Eero Saarinen sought the essential idea and reduced it to the most effective structural solution. One of the most exemplary examples of which is the one-legged design of his Pedestal Collection. These effortlessly majestic pieces came from his desire to eliminate the confusion caused by “the slum of legs” underneath typical chairs and tables. The Pedestal Table, and accompanying Tulip Chair, have since become symbols of mid-century modern design and mainstays of the Knoll design legacy.

Aeron Chair

Designed by Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick

Making the best, better for Earth
Exact same chair, just a little more sustainable.

We updated the Aeron Chair, adding ocean-bound plastic to the body—all without compromising what makes it the best work chair on Earth.

ProductsAeron Chair ocean-bound plastic videoAeron has always been sustainable, designed with less material for more performance. And now it's made with ocean-bound plastic. See how we added this plastic waste.
A pioneering design moves forward
Ergonomic to the core, Aeron was designed for a wide range of body types, thanks to the extensive research from designers Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick nearly 30 years ago. Its launch was pioneering in the office furniture industry—and it still is, thanks to updated research and material innovation, including the addition of ocean-bound plastic to the body of the chair. We've always known Aeron is good for our bodies—now it’s just as good for our environment too.

Where comfort meets support
The Aeron Chair is the benchmark for ergonomic seating since its debut in 1994. Since then, Herman Miller has learned a lot about how to best support people—and their postures. Aeron offers smarter weight distribution through 8Z Pellicle, adjustable PostureFit SL for total spinal support, and balanced recline and natural movement thanks to Harmonic 2 Tilt.

Designed for the elements
Aeron is available in a palette of four meticulously curated material expressions centered on elements pulled from the earth. Onyx is a dramatic ultra-black shade intended to modernize Aeron. Graphite is a distinctive dark gray, with a classic textured finish. Carbon offers a balanced neutral that works equally well in warm and cool environments. Mineral is the lightest and illuminates Aeron's finer points, ideal for open floorplans and spaces. Each component of the chair was thoughtfully designed, creating a fundamentally harmonious color palette.

Striad Lounge Chair and Ottoman
Inspired by the construction of high-performance ski boots, Stuttgart-based designers Markus Jehs and Jürgen Laub designed the Striad Lounge Chair and Ottoman in layers to deliver a premium experience of comfort. The outermost layer, a rigid shell, is merged with an inner shell constructed of a natural fiber composite material, which is then fully upholstered. Individually upholstered dual-density foam cushions form the third layer, resulting in an optimal combination of firm support and supple, pliable comfort.

Offered in low-, mid-, or high-back versions, each with a choice of a four-star auto-return base or fixed four-leg wire base—as well as several finish and upholstery options—Striad can be outfitted appropriately for a multitude of spaces.

An innovative idea, a timeless design
In 1944, Life magazine published an extensive article detailing the Storage Wall, George Nelson’s novel architectural concept for American homes that proposed to make walls thicker so that they could double as a place to put things away.

The piece caught the eye of Herman Miller founder D.J. De Pree, who was searching for a design director after the sudden death of Gilbert Rohde, and Nelson soon had the job. He went on to work as Design Director at Herman Miller for over 25 years. During this time he examined the problems people faced in their homes and offices and designed new types of furniture to address those needs.
From storage wall to cabinet series

The Storage Wall concept was the forerunner to a series of cabinets that Nelson designed over the years. The Rosewood Cabinet Series of 1952 represents a synthesis of Nelson’s approach to modular storage furniture with a heightened attention to quality and craftsmanship. As the range of veneers expanded and design details were standardized, the group was renamed in 1958 after the feature that gives them their unique aesthetic quality—the thin edge that frames the doors and drawers. Today, we have updated these classic pieces with environmentally supportable veneers and finishing processes while maintaining the original design.

Nelson Coconut Lounge Chair

A modern classic, plain and simple
Introduced in 1956, the Coconut Lounge Chair is one artifact of the burst of creativity issued from George Nelson’s design studio, that bustling cadre of designer talent who changed the look and feel of modern American furniture in the mid-20th century.

Coconut is just one of a number of eye-catching designs that came out of the studio while he was Herman Miller’s director of design. Alongside the Marshmallow Sofa and the first L-shaped desk (what we’d call a workstation today), the Coconut Chair stands out as a modern classic, plain and simple.

A vintage advertisement for the Nelson Coconut Lounge Chair featuring a black an white image of the chair with an overlay of energetic orange graphics.

Its three-point triangular cushion evokes a chunk of coconut—Nelson said that it looked like one of eight slices of a whole coconut. The third corner—the one that forms the backrest—is just slightly longer than the two on the sides. That's where the comfort comes from.

This Nelson Coconut Chair we produce today remains true to Nelson’s original design, but we’ve updated the material to a new, more sustainable polymer shell and expanded your available upholstery options. www.homeresource.com

Nelson Marshmallow Sofa

Separate elements that appear to float
George Nelson and Irving Harper, a young designer working in Nelson’s design firm, were approached by an inventor who had created an injection plastic disc that he insisted could be produced inexpensively and would be durable. The designers took a look and arranged 18 of them on a steel frame—the origin of the Marshmallow sofa.

The inventor’s cushions turned out to be impractical, but Nelson and Harper were intrigued by the design they had created so casually, and Herman Miller decided to manufacture the sofa.
By joining separate elements and making them appear to float on air, Nelson and Harper achieved this sofa’s unique appearance and eye-catching appeal, which led the way into the pop art style of the 1960s.

And by the way, that young designer—Irving Harper—also designed the famous Herman Miller company logo.

Deep enough to form a comfortable seat and shallow enough to balance a cup of coffee—that’s how Ray Eames described the depressions on the ends of this sculptural stool that she and Charles designed. That ingenious versatility paired with its geometric good looks and outstanding craftsmanship have made it a go-to in lobbies and living rooms around the world. First introduced in walnut in 1960 as Eames Walnut Stool, its new name reflects the addition of white oak and ebonized ash and the process still used to manufacture the stool.www.homeresource.com

Noguchi Table

How to make a table
“Everything is sculpture,” said Japanese-American sculptor Isamu Noguchi. And he created sculptures out of anything he could get his hands on—stone, metal, wood, clay, bone, paper. Unwilling and unable to be pigeonholed, he created sculptures that could be as abstract as Henri Moore’s and as realistic as Leonardo’s. “To limit yourself to a particular style may make you an expert of that particular viewpoint or school, but I do not wish to belong to any school,”he said. “I am always learning, always discovering.”

Legends about a legend
A Noguchi occasional table with a freeform glass top and curved wood base in a medium finish.
The story behind the Noguchi table is a fascinating one, and Noguchi tells it in his autobiography. “I went to Hawaii in 1939 to do an advertisement (with Georgia O’Keefe). As a result of this, I had met (T.H.) Robsjohn-Gibbings, the furniture designer, who had asked me to do a coffee table for him. I designed a small model in plastic and heard no further before I went west.”

By “went west” Noguchi meant his internment, as a Japanese-American, in an Arizona concentration camp during World War II. During his time there, Noguchi said he was surprised to see a variation of the small model table he had done for Robsjohn-Gibbings published as an advertisement for the English designer. “When, on my return, I remonstrated, he said anybody could make a three-legged table,” said Noguchi. “In revenge, I made my own variant of my own table.”

“Anybody can make a three-legged table.”
The “variant” that Noguchi designed was used to illustrate an article, written by Herman Miller designer George Nelson, called “How to Make a Table.” The table in the illustration became his famous “coffee table.”

In a long lifetime of creative work, Isamu Noguchi designed gardens and plazas, fountains and murals, furniture and paper lamps, and stage sets for modern dance pioneer Martha Graham. But he said that of all the furniture designs he created, the table that bears his name represented his only true success.

Eames Soft Pad Chairs
A major technical achievement
Aluminum Group chairs began as a challenge among legendary designers. Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard were designing the Columbus, Indiana, home of J. Irwin Miller, founder of Cummins Engines. They wanted a high-quality seating product for outdoor use and asked Charles and Ray Eames to develop one. The Eameses accepted.

Ray and Charles Eames, designers of the Eames Molded Wood Stool.
A challenge to the Eames team
Known for their honest use of materials, the Eameses constructed their chairs with cast aluminum and a seat frame meant to support a stretched synthetic mesh. The seat-back suspension was a major technical achievement and represented a departure from the concept of the chair as a solid shell.

A step up to luxury
We began making the Aluminum Group chairs in 1958. In 1969, the Eameses extended the original design by adding plush, individually upholstered cushions. They named these the Soft Pad chairs. The chairs’ simple lines, innovative use of materials, and suspension comfort have kept them among the most popular seating choices for both offices and homes for more than 50 years.

Those chairs became the Aluminum Group, which Herman Miller began manufacturing in 1958. And while they have been in continuous demand, the line has changed and grown over the years. The original mesh meant for outdoor use was discontinued, along with the 4-star base and painted arms on the early designs.

Eames Chaise

Resolving the problem of the power nap
In 1955, while filming on location, director Billy Wilder discovered he could take quick naps on a plank held up by sawhorses. This prompted Wilder to tell his friends Charles and Ray Eames that he needed a narrow office couch. The Eameses remembered that conversation and in 1968 introduced the Eames chaise, giving the first one to Wilder. It has been produced by Herman Miller since then. www.homeresource.com

The more people move, the more they need support that moves with them.
Ten years after the Mirra chair was introduced—during which over 1.5 million chairs had been sold—the designers of Studio 7.5 believed it was time to evaluate and, if necessary, rethink their original design. For one thing, they noted, work is evolving. People move, and the more they’re in motion, the more they need support that moves with them. www.homeresource.com

Caper Multipurpose Chair

“Good design doesn’t have to be expensive.”
Caper chairs and stools were designed by Jeff Weber of Studio Weber + Associates. His goal, and ours, was to create comfortable, mobile seating that’s also affordable. “Too much good design seems expensive,” Weber says, “I wanted to break that cliché.”
White, black, gray, and brown Caper Stacking Chairs.
Weber believes that design is “the connective tissue” between people and the environment, and that the quality of that design—whether of a building or a chair—has a profound effect on quality of life. Caper seating, he says, achieves its high level of performance and comfort by “using standard materials in novel ways.”
