Stress is a health hazard. But a supportive circle of friends can help undo the damaging effects on your DNA 11/28/2021

A new fascinating study by researchers at QUT (Queensland University of Technology) reveals that having supportive social structures buffers and even reverses some of the harmful effects of stress on our genes and health.

This happens through a process called epigenetics, which refers to an additional layer of instructions on top of DNA that determines how they affect the body. The research investigated both positive and negative factors that drive a person’s response to stress and how this changes the epigenetic profiles of genes.

Toxic workplaces increase risk of depression by 300% 10/22/2021

Toxic workplaces increase risk of depression by 300%, shows a new report by the University of South Australia.

The year-long Australian population study found that organisations that don’t prioritise their employees' mental wellbeing can be putting their workers at an increased risk of being diagnosed with depression, as well as high levels of burnout and workplace bullying.

"Evidence shows that companies who fail to reward or acknowledge their employees for hard work, impose unreasonable demands on workers, and do not give them autonomy, are placing their staff at a much greater risk of depression," says Dr Amy Zadow, lead author of the study.

Sickies go legit: 'Doona days' are becoming the norm, but that alone won't stop burnout 10/13/2021

Mental Health Days are on the rise in the corporate world. But is giving paid days off to workers enough?

In a recent article from the ABC Australia, Professor Tim Bentley, director of Edith Cowan University (ECU)'s Centre for Work and Wellbeing, warned companies not to think of days off as a silver bullet to treat mental health in the workplace.

He says that “puts the onus on the worker to manage their own stress levels, as opposed to encouraging senior staff to develop ways of working and support structures that mean employees don't reach the stage of needing leave in the first place.”

At Medibio, we believe that a mentally healthy workplace is not complete without the support of resources and tools like that can give employers a better understanding of the overall mental state of their workforce. Let us help you with that!
