Question from a follower: "What is a Longevity Clause?"
When a couple opens a shared bank account in Israel, they may be asked to sign a Longevity Clause.
This allows each person to use the funds in the event that the other spouse were to pass.
It allows the surviving spouse to continue using the account and avoid having to wait until probate court to access these funds, which may be critical for daily life.
While a Longevity Clause is very useful, it is by no means a substitute for proper estate planning.
This is especially critical for expats, whose financial and estate planning may be complicated by international factors.
If you have questions about how to manage your assets as a US expat, please send us a message.
Question from a follower: "What is a custodian?"
Read this - it has important application to US !
A custodian is a financial institution that safekeeps assets held in brokerage accounts, usually in digital form.
This can include stocks, bonds, cash, and commodities.
Custodians also manage the settlement of trades that happen in the assets they safekeep.
You should choose a custodian who is a third party (not the financial advisor who manages your accounts), and is a large and reputable institution, such as a bank.
For US expats, finding a custodian is a little bit of a difficult task.
Many US custodians will not safekeep assets held in the US for non-US residents.
Your account may even get closed.
What do you do?
If you get kicked out of your US brokerage account, the thing to remember is that your advisor or broker will give you time to find another custodian. You just want to keep a few things in mind, so that you potentially don’t end up with some big tax bills. The first would be if you have a retirement account such as an IRA, you want to find another custodian so that your current broker or advisor does not liquidate the funds and send you a check. If this happens you have 60 days to transfer into another IRA before it becomes taxable. For example, if you had a $500,000 IRA that was liquidated, and you could not transfer it over in 60 days, you would be taxed on the $500,000 at your current tax rate.
The tax implications of changing custodians do matter.

"How do I know if I am an Israeli resident and liable for local taxation?"
Two ways to find out:
Objective Test: looks at the tangible ties one has to the state of Israel such as your place of residence, family, work, and various assets.
Subjective Test: this test has no official stipulations or guidelines but has more to do with the individual’s personal view of their ties to Israel, and can vary from court to court. However, it holds less weight than the objective test.
All this is relevant only if an individual can legally stay in Israel and holds one of the following visa types that allow residency: Israeli citizenship, Permanent Residence permit, visa of category A/1, A/2, A,4 and A/5.
It is also important to note that if one spends more the 183 days of the tax year in Israel, he or she is considered an Israeli resident, unless proven differently.
