After our extended one month pause, we are reopening Albany State Street and Albany Slip 12 on Wednesday, July 17 with some new items and a refreshed look at both cafes. Albany Pine Hills will remain open only for events.

Last week, our team was working hard to get our Albany State Street location ready for reopening - a deep clean, with upgrades and a new layout in store, especially with the three-week pause.

In the words of our events lead Christine, "the place smelled so good."

And then this happened.

Two days before reopening.

We are assessing the situation, but it is exhaustively heartbreaking that on a Sunday, instead of preparing for the week, we now have to file reports, and inventory what may have been stolen or damaged. Due the extensiveness of the situation to the front doors, we will need to postpone our Tuesday reopening.

In the 15 months we've operated Albany State Street, we haven't had a single incident (Albany Pine Hills is a different story).

Small businesses, along with their workers, have a hard enough time out there - this was not needed.

We will keep you posted on the new reopening date and on the rest of our reopening plans this week.

We'll get through this.

Missed us yet? We've missed you, too.

Over the past three weeks since we announced the pause, we have engaged in meaningful discussions on creating a better guest experience and ultimately, strengthening who we are as a brand. Motor Oil Coffee wasn't built in a day, but it sure felt like that over the past year - where we opened cafes at record-speed. In that time, we recognized the constraints and resource limitations that may have resulted in a visit or an experience that did not meet the mark for you, our guests.

Starting next week, we will begin to resume cafe service - starting with Albany State Street on Tuesday, July 9.

This will be followed by Albany Slip 12 later in July. Albany Pine Hills will remain suspended for cafe service and will be utilized for event preparation for at least the month of July, given there are further repairs and modifications that need to be addressed in order to meet the level of good repair we expect. Our light fare options will change as well, with new products to be introduced, along with new bakery items.

Hours of operation will be modified as well, with Albany State Street to be open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Albany Slip 12 Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The hours for Fuel & Spirits: The Slip 12 Bar will remain the same.

Did you know we will be at the Saratoga Jazz Festival this weekend at S**C? As a proud partner and supporter of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, we will be serving both hot coffee and cold brew all weekend long.

Catch us back out there at farmers markets too this weekend before the Independence Day holiday.

We have received a number of questions regarding our pause that we announced yesterday. We'll do our best to answer them here:

Q - Why are you pausing cafe operations?
A - In order for us to make critical changes and fixes, the cafes in Albany need to close to have the time to do the work. This includes equipment repairs, retraining of staff, updated light fare offerings, deep cleaning, restocking of cups and coffee supplies, and much more. These items cannot be done while the stores are in full operation. Further, we'll be making changes to our menu and other aspects that have been on the backburner - with the intention of improving quality control and the guest experience top of mind.

Q - When are you pausing cafe operations?
A - Starting Thursday, June 13. The last day of full operation companywide will be Wednesday, June 12.

Q - Why is just Fuel & Spirits open at Slip 12?
A - The bar program at Slip 12 just started three months ago and operates as a separate division of Motor Oil Coffee. Hours of operation will remain as they are from Wednesday to Saturday, with the possibility of expanding to additional days. We do intend to work with Redburn Development and Huck Finn's Playland to provide a bar experience for select days for residents at Slip 12 and guests of Huck Finn's Playland this summer.

Q - When do you plan on reopening?
A - We are expecting either later in June, if not by early July. Once we have a set date for each location, we will announce it on social media and via e-mail blast.

Q - How can I help baristas during this time, many of whom I love to tip?
A - We are working on a collective Venmo to collect tips to distribute to barista staff during this time. This should be set by tomorrow (Thursday, June 13).

Q - Are you still doing events like farmers markets and festivals?
A - Yes, those are not being interrupted and are as scheduled and planned accordingly.

Q - Can I still order online at motoroilcoffee.com?
A - Part of our pause will be revamping our website and improving the ordering process in response to feedback we've received at motoroilcoffee.com. We plan to relaunch online ordering in early July.

Q - Can I still host a private event at your locations?
A - Yes, please e-mail [email protected] to get started. All locations will remain open for private events during the pause.

Q - Are you closing?
A - No, we are not shutting down as a company. In fact, we believe our best days are ahead. But like with anyone who has run a marathon, at some point, you need to give yourself a breather to reset.

📣 AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT 📣

Starting Thursday, June 13, all cafe operations will pause through at least the end of June in order for us to do a "summer reset". Our State Street and Madison Avenue locations will be closed during this time, while our Slip 12 location will remain open only for bar operations (Fuel & Spirits).

We will remain at the farmers markets and festivals as agreed upon and as scheduled, including the Saratoga Jazz Festival at S**C.

This reset allows for us to fully restock all supplies, make modifications to our light fare offerings, retrain staff, deep clean our cafes, and better align our operations for a stronger guest experience. We also anticipate reopening Madison Avenue with beer, wine, cider, and mead as well - so get ready for that.

We've heard you and we want to do right by you.

Upon reopening in a couple of weeks, we will launch with limited summer hours that we will post in advance before returning to full service sometime in the fall.

We know this may be disruptive to your morning or afternoon routine - but in order for us to grow as a brand, as a company, and ultimately, to provide a much better experience that we can be proud of, we need the time to do it right.

In the meantime, Fuel & Spirits will remain open as advertised.

We regret to report that we will be closed tonight and tomorrow at least until we resolve a clerical compliance error with the City of Albany that prohibits us from opening. We are working with the City to resolve this matter as soon as possible.

We'll be open at Albany State Street this weekend for the NCAA women's basketball regional taking place here in Downtown Albany at the MVP Arena. That means you'll be able to rev up before seeing the games - hopefully, you have tickets (if not, it's not exactly cheap).

If you aren't able to go the Arena, you can catch the games on Saturday at Albany Slip 12.

We've been quiet on social media for the past couple of weeks - hard at work off-camera - but we have some good things in store, including that we will be serving spirits, beer, wine, cider, and mead at Albany Slip 12 starting in the next few days (stay tuned on the soft opening of the bar operation).

Albany State Street will have weekend hours this upcoming weekend for the NCAA women's regional happening around the corner at the MVP Arena. You'll be able to watch the tournament at Slip 12 throughout the weekend.
