Photos of Postpartum Alopecia (hair loss) AKA Telogen Effluvium.

The hair follicle has the three phases of growth. The Anagen Phase (growth phase), the Catagen Phase (intermediate phase) and the Telogen Phase (resting or shedding phase). Normally 85-95% of hair is growing and 5-15 % is in the resting phase. Women, on average, shed about 100 hairs per day.

Telogen Effluvium, ( also called Postpartum Alopecia when paired w post pregnancy ) is a condition where you lose hair after you have delivered a baby. According to the American Pregnancy Association more than 50% of woman will experience postpartum alopecia.

During pregnancy, due to an increase in Estrogen levels, hair stays in a resting phase for longer. You will lose hair less on a daily basis. After birth however, your hormones settle down and estrogen levels drop. Hairs begin to shift into the shedding phase. During this time you may notice a considerable amount of hair in your hair brush or shower. You may also begin to notice some thinning on your head. Often times women see this thinning the most in the temple area, but it can occur throughout the entire head. Usually by the baby's first birthday you should be back to your normal self.

WHAT DO I DO
First of all, take a deep breath. It's completely normal. Be gentle with yourself, you're a brand-new mother and you have enough to worry about!

1. Avoid using shampoos labeled "conditioning shampoo" - these shampoos tend to weigh down the hair and make them very heavy, often times causing more hair loss.
2. Use a wide tooth comb instead of a brush. This will keep you from pulling on the hair so much. Also be gentle during combing especially when your hair is wet because the hair is more prone to breakage when it is wet.
3. Experiment with different hair products and styles. Often times using root lifting mousses or volumizers will help create the appearance of thicker hair. Short haircuts seem to work well for new moms. Not only do they help with the weight pulling on the areas of thinning but they're easier to take care of with the demands of a newborn.
4. Try using a product like Toppik
https://www.toppik.com/
Products like this (or similar products) are meant to cover up the areas of the scalp and create the appearance of fuller, thicker hair.
5. Visit a Board Certified Hair Restoration Surgeon for nonsurgical treatment such as PRP. PRP or platelet rich plasma is a suitable treatment for helping temporary hair loss. Platelets are derived from your own blood and then injected back into the scalp in the areas of thinning. PRP works to regenerate stem cells in the hair and stimulate new cell growth.
6. Most of the time by the baby's first birth day the thinning areas should begin to regrow. If it doesn't however, a Board Certified Hair Restoration Surgeon, can help discuss further options such as additional PRP treatments, laser light therapy, oral therapy and surgical hair restoration.

Children are the center of our souls, but thinning after delivering a baby can cause an extremely unnerving experience. Just know that there IS HOPE.

So, we are doing a Crown case today on this Memorial Day weekend. We harvested 1,562 grafts yielding approximately 3,400 hairs.

Our patient is a first timer with average donor hair.

Today, I have 2 world class surgical technicians, Carol and Roxanne helping me along with my Practice Manager/Medical Assistant, my beautiful wife Jaime.

We also did 7cc PRP placed into the crown recipient area immediately prior to placing the hairs.

Here are some pictures from today's case.

Carol working on the crown and I am working on the front hairline... a very good day!

We were able to get him over 4,000 hairs which is remarkable since this was his 5th surgery overall (1st with us). I was hoping for maybe 2,800 hairs.

The more you harvest in the donor area in the back of the head, the less the yield can be . However, every now and then, you get that patient who surprises you 👍

Well, today We Grow Hair New York completed our 1st Hair Restoration procedure.

Although I have been a Hair Restoration Surgeon for many years, I have to admit that I was a little nervous last night and early this morning.

However, once the case began, all went well and we did an amazing procedure on a really great patient.

It was a little hectic while we were waiting for medical supplies right up to the last minute to come in and some supplies never arrived.

So we made some phone calls and there were 4 Physician colleagues of mine who came through big time to make today happen.

So, our little business has begun and I am feeling very emotionally exhausted at the end of today.

Can't wait for our next case ... soon our full webpage will be up and along with our Hair Restoration procedure, we are almost ready. to begin our PRP program, our Laser Hair program, our line of Shampoo and much more...

Thank you for all the kind words of support from all of you...👍

While you might be stuck in the snow today here are some fun facts about hair to pass the time...

Hair is one of the most individually unique, expressive parts of our bodies–but whether your hair is short, long, straight, wavy, or coily, these fun hair facts apply to just about everybody.

15 Hair Facts

1. Black is the most common hair color in the world. Red, which only exists in about 1 percent of the world’s population, is the rarest. Blonde hair comes in a close second, with only 2 percent of the population.

2. Hair can grow just about anywhere on the body, except for the palms of your hands, the soles of your feet, and on your lips and mucous membranes.

3. Hair is more elastic than you think! It can expand by up to 30% of its original length when wet. Leading to breakage/damage if you're not careful when brushing & combing while wet.

4. Do you ever see a lot of hair in the drain after showering? That’s normal–we shed between 40 and 150 strands of hair a day. So unless you're seeing visible changes to your scalp, take a breath, it's totally normal.

5. When did it become popular to color hair? In 1950, only about 7% of women colored their hair, but in 2015, it’s up to about 75%.

6. Next to bone marrow, hair is the fastest growing tissue in the human body. On average, hair grows .3 – .5 mm per day, 1.25 centimetres or 0.5 inches per month, and 15 centimetres or 6 inches per year.

7. But it's not THAT fast...Trying to grow out your hair? It takes about 7 years to grow it to your waist, and 3 years to grow it to your shoulders!

8.In the Victorian Era, hair was used as jewelry! People had brooches, pendants and watch fobs made from the hair of lost loved ones as a stylish way of paying homage.

9. A strand of hair is actually stronger than a copper wire with the same diameter.

10.Hair is like a chemistry project–here is its composition: 50 percent carbon, 21 percent oxygen, 17 percent nitrogen, 6 percent hydrogen, and 5 percent sulphur.

11. How much hair do we have on our scalps? More than you’d think. The average person has 100,000 - 150,000 strands of hair on her head (so don’t worry too much about the 40 - 150 you lost today).

12. You can tell a lot about a person from her hair. It’s often used by forensic scientists to learn everything in a person’s bloodstream: medicine, drugs, alcohol, vitamins and minerals.

13. Men might be from Mars, and women from Venus, but there is absolutely no difference between male and female hair in terms of growth cycle and structure.

14. The scientific name of grey hair is canities and a split end is known as trichoptilosis.

15. All of the hair follicles in the human body are formed by the time we are just five months old in the womb. When a hair falls out, it will usually re-grow, but can often stop to many different reasons. But don't worry , we have you covered with hair loss solutions after you can no longer grow hair.

Have a fun Hair day.....
