Our Story
Bernie’s Barber Shop was originally established in 1959 on lower Broadway in Schenectady by Bernie Viscusi my Grandfather. Bernie began his career as a barber while he was living in Squille, Italy. He was only 13 when he learned the trade, and he opened his own shop at age 16. In a small village of people, there was only one barber shop and it belonged to him.
Growing up Bernie was not just a Grandfather but a father figure as well. After high school it was clear college was not for me. I needed direction and Bernie was confident I could follow in his foot steps. I enrolled in barber school in 2010. After school I would go watch Bernie cut hair and help out at the shop and it was at this time I knew this would become my career. My Grandfather was the first of several mentors in my career as a barber.
