Recently Ultra-short pulse lasers have been favored and applied with advanced technology for multiple Industrial applications to bring about cost efficient precision to micromachining.

The ultra-short pulse lasers, (approximately 100 femtoseconds to 10 picoseconds)
perform unique tasks in multiple industrial applications, particularly cutting, drilling, marking and other surface modification processes. Ultra-short pulse laser energy ablates with minimal heating so there is only a small heat affected zone. This improved process enables new and more complex product designs, improves product reliability, and lowers
overall production costs.

Mundt recognized that ultra-short pulse lasers have become essential manufacturing tools in the medical device, aerospace, high end automotive and consumer electronics industries, as well as other industries requiring extreme precision. After twenty five years of building both standard and custom Laser Workstations for multiple mixed applications required by customers, an idea was generated by Mundt to build an exceptional ultra short pulse Laser Work-Horse that combines a Cartesian System and a Galvanometer to offer more scope and capabilities to address most general industrial requirements.

The new Mundt DB-241218-7 Axis machine is an advanced manufacturing application tool with more built in capabilities than any other machine. This complex ultra-short pulse laser utilizes Full Travel Field of View (FTFV) and allows for seamless machining over large areas. The machine is able to move from large to small parts without tiling. This special dual applications machine has 7 axis of motion that is ideal for producing complex shaped parts.

This Innovative Mundt DB-241218-7axis Laser Workstation is highly versatile, with the ability to do a multitude of possible complex motion applications required for advanced manufacturing for a large assortment of industries. This adaptable Laser Work-Horse offers more scope and capabilities for multiple industrial requirements than any other machine available on the market today. (AVAILABLE, CLASS I & IV).

LASER OPTIONS

Depending on the actual individual application required, the DB-241218-7Axis Workstation can operate with one laser, or multiple lasers. The basic DB-241218 can be purchased with one laser and 3 axis. When the need arises, you can augment the system with additional lasers, axis and tooling to suit any changing requirements you may have.

A single laser could be adequate to manufacture a complex part whereas an R&D facility could well utilize the capabilities offered by multiple lasers and additional axis

Mundt Offshore Wave Energy Convertor

Background information

The purpose of this technology is to harness energy from ocean waves and swell. Such devices are called Offshore Wave Energy Convertors (OWEC)

Unlike wind and solar power, wave energy is always available even when there are no apparent waves and the ocean is calm there are swells constantly moving water sufficient to generate electricity. OWEC’s capable of generating a given amount of power from waves are much smaller than windmills or solar generators of comparable power leading to lower cost and aesthetic impact.

The efficiency of the OWEC has a direct impact on procurement and operation costs. Further, it must be robust to the harsh offshore environment, The costs in money and time for deploying prototypes to the ocean are considerable. Testing in a controlled laboratory setting provides the engineers improved insight and test cycle time.

The MUNDT technology contribution

The Mundt & Associates Vertical OWEC test bed provides accurate performance measurements that usually eliminates the need to deploy the test in the ocean. The unique vertical format provides a mechanical environment consistent with the actual use conditions. The researcher can apply any desired stochastic wave simulation profile through the system control. Other equipment monitors the power output from the OWEC generator to gauge efficiency.

The machine is 9’ x 5’ x 17’ and is capable of moving 2000 pounds at over 6’/sec

The Mundt WFG II (Wave Form Generator II)

The Mundt WFG II enables the user to utilize a Fiber Laser to its fullest potential to produce smaller profile welds, (for micro products) with less heat input and finer cuts that are required by the medical implantable device manufacturing markets and aerospace industry.

Fiber Lasers, capable of continuous and modulated power output continue to be applied
to an increasingly wide range of material processing roles.

The purpose of this board is to change temporal pulse shapes for cutting and welding applications. The board improves efficiencies by decreasing heat input for welding, minimizes heat effective zones and kerf width for cutting. The results provide better quality welds and cuts with less waste while manufacturing micro products.

The WFGII provides the following unique benefits:

The WFGII is fully integrated into the laser system

The wave form can be transitioned between “normal” and “ramped” levels

Power, pulse width, frequency and ramping may be specified by user

Linear transition from normal to ramped or ramped to normal over user
specified time interval

The wave form can be over one minute in duration, providing flexibility,
particularly in welding, for crater control

All wave form parameters can be controlled within the motion program
providing complete synchronization of laser and motion

The WFGII provides seamless control of the laser within the powerful
system programming environment
