🎆 July is Fireworks Safety Month 🎆

As we gear up for the festive season, our hospitalists urge everyone to prioritize safety. Fireworks can be a fun way to celebrate, but it's important to handle them responsibly to prevent accidents and injuries that could lead to hospital visits.

To stay safe and enjoy the celebrations responsibly, here are some essential tips to keep in mind:

👀 Adult supervision: Always have an adult present when handling fireworks.
🧯 Safety Distance: Maintain a safe distance from fireworks when lit.
🔍 Follow local laws: Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before purchasing or using them.
🌞 Use outdoors only: Fireworks should only be used outdoors, in a clear area away from buildings and flammable materials.
🚰 Keep water nearby: Have a bucket of water or a hose ready in case of fire or other emergencies.
🚨 Emergency Preparedness: Know emergency numbers and be prepared to act swiftly if needed.
🗑️ Dispose properly: After the fireworks complete their burning, douse them with plenty of water before discarding them.

The team at St. Joseph Healthcare in Bangor knows that a great patient experience starts with a great employee experience. For this reason, the team celebrated Patient Experience Week as a reminder that EVERYONE plays a role in the patient experience, even if not directly at the bedside.

"Medicine is both an art and a science. Would Leonardo da Vinci have painted the Mona Lisa, or would Jonas Salk have developed the Polio vaccine if they were interrupted a hundred times a day for administrative tasks and FYI alerts, demanding a response one at a time? Very likely, we’d have been subjected to bad art and unreliable science. In medicine, the consequences are more personal."

"The work involved in responding to an interruption, where you focus and refocus, is part of something called 'cognitive load.' NASA has shown that the level of cognitive load correlates with doctor burnout. Diagnosing and managing illness is complex, but the 'hassle factor' has greatly increased. Today’s hospitalists tend to practice in highly interruptive environments. Apogee has solutions to assess and reduce interruptions while improving the 'signal to noise' ratio, helping doctors and nurses do more of the work they love and are trained to do."
