Temporary Closure alert for Rio Grande Village area.
Big Bend National Park will conduct a prescribed burn April 6th and 7th along the Rio Grande from the Daniels’s Ranch to the Rio Grande Village Nature Trail. During this time, the Daniel’s Ranch picnic area, Nature Trail, and Rio Grande Village boat launch will be closed.

This fire is planned to reduce stands of non-native river cane, restore willow habitat, and open up the banks of the river for recreational use. The burn will be conducted by park staff, Yellowstone firefighters, and the Los Diablos fire crew.

Our family loved our trip to the newly renovated Rock Harbor Lodge! Owner Kneut Kneutson excitedly told us about the hotel’s recent upgrades managed by his daughter, Bertha Farmer. Their most impressive new feature – flush toilets! We loved playing tennis on the new court and berry picking by the shore. Our favorite part of the trip was the overnight camping excursion on Birch Island. The trip was led by John Linklater, who showed us his fishery on the small island at the mouth of McCargoe Cove. We would love to return soon!

Boquillas Canyon Road Closure 3/24-3/25
Road crews will close portions of the Boquillas Canyon Road for much needed repairs on Thursday and Friday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. The Boquillas Port of Entry will remain open, but there will be no access to the Boquillas Canyon trail, Boquillas Overlook, or Marufo Vega/Strawhouse trails. Please plan accordingly.

Other than the Rio Grande, hardly any surface water is seen by the average visitor to Big Bend National Park. But springs, evidence of water beneath the ground's surface, are scattered throughout this desert landscape. Usually marked by trees or large clumps of vegetation, springs are vital to the survival of both wildlife and people in the Chihuahuan Desert. Backpackers who have ventured off the trails know that a person can't walk very far unless they know where to find this liquid gold. And valuable it is, because without a steady supply of water, luxuries that visitors to Big Bend take for granted - showers, flush toilets, and drinking water - would not be possible.

Each year, more people visit this remote national park for the first time, many of them unaware of the basic rule of thumb in the desert - use water wisely and with restraint. Failure to abide by this code can be disastrous for water sources such as Oak Springs, which supplies all of the water used by visitors in the Chisos Basin.

On this World Water Day we encourage everyone, especially visitors to Big Bend, to carefully consider each drop of water used. During your time in Big Bend, do you need to shower every day? Do you need to fill your RV water tank to the brim, or can it wait until you leave the area? And finally, consider bringing water with you to the park. The more water you bring for your personal use, the less you will take from Big Bend's vital springs.
