Oku Market day
Dear Oku People,
The recent severe floods affecting the rivers, streams from the mountain, and the plains of Mbam in Oku underline the urgent need to combat deforestation on Mount Oku and plant more trees in the Kilum Mountain Forest. Here’s why this is essential:
- Flood Prevention: Trees and vegetation in the Kilum Mountain Forest absorb significant amounts of rainwater. This reduces surface runoff and prevents excess water from quickly flowing into rivers and streams, which helps to prevent the serious floods we have witnessed.
- Soil Protection: Forest roots stabilize the soil, preventing erosion and landslides. This ensures that the soil remains intact, allowing it to absorb more water and reducing the risk of sediment-laden floods downstream.
- Regulated Water Flow: Forests slow down the flow of water through their dense vegetation. This helps to moderate the flow of water into rivers and streams, reducing the intensity and frequency of floods during heavy rains.
- Reduced Sediment Build-Up: By minimizing soil erosion, forests reduce the amount of sediment carried into rivers and streams. This helps to maintain the capacity of these water bodies, preventing blockages that can exacerbate flooding.
Protecting and restoring the Kilum Mountain Forest is essential to safeguarding our rivers, streams, and plains from floods. By fighting deforestation and planting more trees on Mount Oku, we can create a resilient environment that benefits everyone in our community.
Let us unite in this effort to protect our land and ensure a safer future for all.
