Station 17: Orgins

Once a pop-up boutique at street fairs, marketplaces and festivals, Station 17 is now a brick-and-mortar in Seal Beach, selling boho-chic and street-sassy clothing, accessories, gifts and candy. It’s named Station 17 because it is a “station” where all of owner Cynthia Freund’s paths in life meet; the 17 is for the day she was born.

Freund has been involved in all aspects of the fashion industry. She began her journey in retail and modeling in the surf industry with Quiksilver and Raisins Swimwear. She then went to UC Santa Barbara, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Film Studies. Her
first internship was at MTV, where she quickly learned that wardrobe styling and costume design were her calling. After much persistence, she landed a job with the TV show Friends. She went on to dress musicians on stages and album covers, as well as numerous people on runways and for magazines, television shows and commercials. Her credits are very diverse. She has styled fashion shows at LA Fashion week and for P&G Hair products including Sebastian and Wella. She has wardrobed commercials for companies such as Amazon, Ford, Taco Bell and Mountain Dew. And in music, she has worked with the American Idols, Mötley Crüe and John Mayer. She has styled many celebrities including Rob Lowe, Kat Von D and Pamela Anderson. The most recent TV shows she worked were After Lately with Chelsea Handler and Lohan Beach Club with Lindsay Lohan.

Station 17 started as a side project. It was not much different from working in production as a wardrobe stylist, with the shopping, long hours, outdoor elements, schlepping and crazy people. But instead of dressing actors, she was dressing “real” people. After two years of happy customers, blood, sweat and tears, Freund decided it was time to turn her pop-up into something more permanent. The boutique is a reflection of her colorful life, with everything from airy bohemian and beach styles to bold rock & roll pieces. Not only will you find fun unique clothing, but you will also discover earth-inspired jewelry and gifts, pop-culture designs on flannels and matches, succulents in melted records and liquor bottles, worldly musical instruments, candles and oils, toys, and a vintage candy station.
