Rare Pulps
Sharing the stories, art, and imagination of rare pulp magazines
New Story Magazine - August 1913 and All-Story Cavalier Weekly - May 16 1914... Third and fourth Tarzan cover appearances π¦
Not quite the first appearance, but I love these two Tarzan covers which are the third and fourth cover appearances from 1913 and 1914. The New Story especially is such a classic image of Tarzan swinging through the jungle. It's also a complete π» of a pulp, so I'm super happy to have a copy.
SOLD! A few big books went out the door to new homes recently. The Startling January 1950 Robot cover and March 1950 Witch woman covers were the two highest graded on the (still very early) census, beating out a few pedigree copies. The Lone Ranger was a nice high grade copy that went to a friend instead of the plastic factory π.
Getting a little bit better at letting go! And before you DM, sorry I don't share buyer names or prices...but I will share what might be for sale soon π. Happy hunting
Spider #1 - October 1933 - 4.5 OW pages
Another first issue, this time of the Spider π·οΈπΈοΈ. Cover by Walter Baumhofer who also illustrated Doc Savage #1 (and all of the early Doc covers). Spider #1 was released the same month as the Batwoman Weird Tales issue π¦ βοΈ. What a fun month to be a pulp collector!
Analog - December 1963 and March 1965 β πͺ±
First appearance of Dune in print from Analog in 1963, and the classic sandworm cover from 1965. Excited to re-watch the second Dune movie this weekend! I loved the 1984 Dune movie, and the mini series on SyFy from early 2000s is underrated (and features James McAvoy aka young Professor X), but Villeneuve really took the story to a new level. Can't wait for the next movie πΏπ₯
Secret Agent X #1 - February 1934 - 4.5 White pages
Taking inspiration from and posting a π Secret Agent X pulp. Pulpapalooza is only a week away (thanks to our hosts and ) and I'm super excited for a pulp-themed weekend. Still figuring out what to bring....any requests?
Weird Tales #1 - March 1923 - 0.5 CR/OW
If you know me, you know I absolutely love Weird Tales so this is one of my grails. This is the first state cover with the reversed color scheme. Classic case of "buy the book, not the grade". Back cover and last page are half gone, but the front presents beautifully. Big thanks to for the hookup on this one! π
This one is staying locked up, but I'll have plenty others to bring next week to Pulpapalooza! Hope to see a lot of you there! π»
SOLD! First three issues of Secret 6 from 1934. Always loved this short run of 4 issues, but decided to finally let them go and chase some other things on my want list. π π₯
Had a great experience using to sell these, and can't wait to see what's coming now that they're part of !
For Sale: instant pulp collection, full of keys and some pretty rare books π²
It's been a fun ride folks, but I've made the tough decision to move on from pulp collecting. I'll always enjoy the art and stories in the pulps, but it takes a lot of energy and π° to keep chasing. It's time to put that energy towards another hobby....
Open to trade for VHS tapes and modern Pokemon cards. Serious inquiries only. π
Happy St. Patrick's day π from the Batwoman π¦
Weird Tales October 1933 - classic Batwoman cover - 6.0 OW/W pages
Figured I'd start posting my recent CGC submissions and what better book to start with than this classic cover. The fact that it also contains an HPL and Conan story inside makes this one of my favorite pulps in my collection. π¦ βοΈ
Why did I decide to slab my books? Originally I'd only planned to send in 2 pulps, and keep my PC in mylar. Then I realized that over the past 4 years as I upgrade books, I prefer to let my undercopies go instead of hoard them. So my PC today could be someone else's PC tomorrow. Grading adds some certainty for the buyer and seller when that happens, so I'd either grade them now or later. Plus it's a completely reversible thing - don't like a slab, just crack it open. Grading isn't for everyone and every book, but I'm pretty happy with the 22 I've graded so far and I'm already preparing my next batch.
Now pressing.....that I'm still not sure about.....anyone tried it yet?
"What's in the box!" π
First batch of pulps back from CGC...should I open them?
SOLD π₯ Uncanny Tales - April/May 1939
Another Red Circle weird menace pulp from Martin Goodman (precursor to Timely/Marvel). This is the first issue and features "probably the most sadistic torture story ever featured in the horror pulps" according to Robert Weinberg (source: Bookery Guide). Glad it found a great new home!
Weird Tales - May/June/July 1924 - triple issue with H.P. Lovecraft cover story (ghost written for Harry Houdini)
I posted this a while back, but wanted to complete the Houdini trio. This was the first Lovecraft cover in Weird Tales during the "let's boost sales using Houdini's name" phase of Weird Tales, and HPL appears a total of three times in this triple issue! π The rumor goes that there was such a gruesome story in this issue that it was pulled from newsstands....making it tougher to find than the others π
Weird Tales April 1924 - cover πͺ π»
The second of three rare Houdini covers for Weird Tales in early 1924, this pulp is only a month away from turning π―. This is a larger bedsheet sized pulp, the same size as my last post but probably an inch shorter and half an inch smaller in width than the 1923 issue I posted a few days ago.
If you know me, you know I don't like hoarding multiple copies of the same book....so swipe right to see my other copy which I'll be selling soon! π Still shocked I've owned one of these, let alone two, so it's time for someone else to get to experience that feeling.
Weird Tales - March 1924 - Robert Weinberg collection β οΈπ
Another great bedsheet Weird Tales - this the first of three straight Houdini covers in early 1924. I've always thought this was one of the better covers from the bedsheet era with Houdini locked in a dungeon with his companion Mr. π. Definitely a special copy coming from the collection of renowned pulp collector Robert Weinberg.
Weird Tales - July/August 1923 π π₯
If I'm going to have the RarePulps name...I have to post some rare pulps from time to time! This GIANT bedsheet Weird Tales is from July/August 1923, and is the largest and rarest pulps I own. Swipe to see how big compared to a normal pulp size. This was only the 5th issue of Weird Tales, and the third in bedsheet size. Super happy to have it, though it's so big it won't be inside a slab anytime soon.... π
My first pulp submission to ! Plus a few books to the one and only π»
25 pulps, you'll have to wait and see π
SOLD! π₯ Sinister Stories - February 1940 - First issue
Sinister Stories was a short run of three issues that only lasted until May 1940. Each cover was a reprint from Terror Tales, with this issue featuring the September 1938 Terror Tales torture cover.
Happy New Year to the pulp community! π
2023 was a great year, and I can't wait to see what 2024 has in store....maybe even pulp grading around the corner!? π
Lots of fun pickups this year, but Weird Tales #1 was easily the biggest for me. Got another few early WTs, some rare and obscure pulps, and my first cover proof.
π₯
Weird Tales - February 1928 - Call of Cthulhu by H.P. Lovecraft π
First appearance of Cthulhu, and second appearance of Ghost Table π. Just got this upgraded pulp grail with a bright red spine. The red spines on Weird Tales are by far my favorite thing to see on the bookshelf. β₯οΈ
I'll be bringing my other copy which is pretty nice to in November π
Cosmopolitan - April to December 1897 - War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells
Super excited to complete the full set of War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells in its original form from The Cosmopolitan in 1897. The story ran as a series from April to December before eventually being printed as a hardcover. No, I didn't rip the covers off and show the table of contents....this is just what they look like! π π π½
Amazing Stories - August 1927 - War of the Worlds
My favorite cover in the whole Amazing Stories run with a classic π cover and scene from War of the Worlds. Really happy to upgrade to a higher grade copy...with nice page quality which isn't something you see very often in pulps. π« π½ π
The - Weird Tales π, Doc Savage π¦Έ, The Spider π·οΈ, Astounding Stories π, Amazing Stories π¨βπ
I love collecting first issues, and these are probably my top 5 right now. Pretty fun seeing them all together π. Which #1 would you add to the picture? π₯
Weird Tales #1 - March 1923 π₯π
Never thought I'd own this book, and still in shock posting this. I've been lucky enough to grab some cool books over the past few years with a lot of help from others, but this is probably the grail. The first issue π₯ of the first American weird/horror π» π pulp. Big thanks to for the assist on this one.
The Harvard Journal of Pictorial Fiction - Spring 2023
Honored to have contributed a small part to this fantastic fanzine put together by none other than Dr.
Some other great articles by and .monster as well. This, as they say, is going in the PC π
