Iceland is full of wonders—from the fascinating language, to the rugged landscape veined by spectacular rivers, to the incredible number of waterfalls you can see in a single day. While fishing for sea-run brown trout with ’s Kristján Rafnsson and Sindri Hlíðar Jónsson, Phil Monahan was lucky to swing-up a beautiful Atlantic salmon, fresh from the ocean. The run was just beginning during the last week in July, and the rivers were high and muddy at first. But as they fell and cleared, and the weather held out, the fishing picked up considerably. Anglers who want to experience the peak of these runs can click the link below to learn about Orvis Week at Battle Hill Lodge.

The most exciting way to fly-fish for bass and panfish is to use topwater bugs, but sometimes the fish may not want to commit to eating a surface fly. In this case, try a Popper-Dropper setup. The commotion caused by the popper attracts the fishes' attention, and then they see a tasty nymph hanging there. You'll be surprised by just how effective this technique can be.

This time of year, you can experience two seasons, or more, in a single day. While afternoons still feel like summer, there’s a fall-like chill in the air in the mornings and evenings, and snow isn’t out of the question in some places. The key to staying comfortable is a good layering system that allows you to quickly adjust to the conditions. Breathable, sun-protective shirts, stylish and functional mid-layers, and warm vests and jackets help you make the most of your time outdoors.

In one month, we can make a difference.
Throughout September, we’re making it easy for Orvis customers to support the local conservation and participation initiatives they are most passionate about with Great Giveback Days.
In just five years of our Great Giveback Days program, together we’ve raised over $1.7M for many different organizations, including Trout Unlimited, Project Healing Waters, and pet adoption groups. This year, our goal is to raise $500K in local store markets.
Orvis retail stores are partnering with local nonprofit organizations to help support the important work they do. Please contact or visit your local Orvis retail store for details on who they’ve chosen to partner with.
Nestled against the intersection of Idaho and British Columbia, the Yaak Valley is a cleft cut into a piece of earth that is green and soft, surrounded by mountains draped in a quilt of regenerating fir and spruce and larch. The Yaak River drains southward to meet the Kootenai just north of Troy (population 900), whereupon the big river becomes bigger still, gathering its strength for the journey north and west. Up the Yaak, wolves and grizzly bears prowl through the timber in a wild landscape shared by a few hundred indomitable residents who are tough enough, or compelled enough by romance and solitude, to scratch out a living close to the land. The Yaak Valley is not a place you stumble upon by mistake; it’s a place you go looking for, seeking the chance to be dwarfed by something or the very real possibility of getting lost in more ways than one.
Tucked in the northwestern corner of Montana, Kootenai Country is a land of big woods and waters. If you love wilderness, it’s one of the last best places in the Lower 48 to get truly lost and experience a sense of remoteness that allows a deep connection with nature. Thirty-five years ago, two kids from New Hampshire made their way into this vast landscape, and they’ve since carved out a remarkable life and career introducing others to the wonders of the region.
